Dope of the Week: Timothy Hess

If you were driving near Fulton Avenue this afternoon, you might have seen a high speed chase between Evansville Police and a dump truck. Officers followed the reckless driving truck driver to Virginia and Garfield where they finally were able to pull the driver out.

That drive is 25-year-old Timothy Hess. Police say that Hess allegedly stole the dump truck from an Indianapolis body shop. Upon his capture, Hess had a few words to share with EPD officers.

You can take me to the hospital but I’m not mental. I come out and I will still smoke pot. Okay, well, I been to prison so that ain’t gonna hurt me none.

Words of wisdom to live by for sure.

What lesson is to be learned from this? A police cruiser is always going to be faster than a dump truck.

Missed Connections

Craigslist is a centralized network of online community classifieds, job postings, personals and more started by a guy named Craig. Evansville has had its own Craigslist site for a few years now and one of it’s most useful features is missed connections.

Sometimes you are out at a local bar or restaurant, and catch the eye of something across the room. You might even pick up a conversation with the person and hit it off. Unfortunately, the night ends without you getting contact information: sometimes not even a name. That’s where craigslist comes in and It’s Evansville come in. To help you out, we periodically spot some of the missed connections that are posted locally, and hopefully help some poor guy or gal out in their attempts to find true love.

Brad Paisley concert…. - m4w

sorry the seating arrangement didn’t work out for the three of you. its a shame you had to move, i would have liked to have gotten to know you better. i was with my dad so i didn’t exactly want to go chasing you down when you guys slipped out a little early. hope you enjoyed the concert.

New rule: if you go to a concert with your dad, you are not allowed to pick up dates.

Where are you hun?! Well no fear. When the time is right. Right? No doubt.

Fo sho.

Anyone know Becky Underwood? - m4w - 55

I’m curious if anyone knows of a Becky (Rebecca) Underwood who, as a teen, lived on Iowa street in Evansville?

Be sure to notice that this gentleman is presently 55 years old and is looking for someone from his high school days. What a miserable life.

Carnival Legend - m4m

Met you the last night of the cruise, although I met your friends before. Though we are both in relationships, would love to stay in contact with you. Last say you in coffee shop in Tampa. Hit me up!

I’m not really sure if this guy is from Evansville or met someone from Evansville on a cruise. Either way, you’re post is screaming infidelity.

someplace else - m4m - 23

I was at someplace else tonight and so were you. You spoke to me but I think I was a little to drunk to respond properly. I thought you were really cute. I was wearing a blue button up shirt and jeans. I have blonde hair and was with a group of 3 girls. hit me up if inerested.

Am I the only one that notices a pattern that most of these posts are from guys seeking girls?

MC With AN From AFH - w4m

Get yer #&$@#&$!*# metal ass home or I’ll give you something to growl about! [Shrill voice.] [Waving iron frying pan.] [Chewing Kodiak Wintergreen.]

There is nothing I can add that will make this brilliance any greater.

Happy Monday. Here’s what’s up.

  • This weekends D-Day re-enactment was a success in terms of attendance and national attention. Unfortunately, it may not return next year because of the expenses. The LST Ship Memorial is asking for more corporate sponsorships to help offset those costs.
  • Republican mayoral candidate David Nixon sought contributions to help him get elected to the EVSC board. While it didn’t violate any laws, it has more people in the GOP camp calling for his head.
  • Want to see some cars? There’s a large car show at Roberts Stadium on Wednesday.

East Side Review: Salad World

If you know me, or saw that awful profile of me in the Courier a few weeks ago, you know that I’m a bit obsessive with being healthy. I workout twice a day and usually try to eat healthy for the most part. Sadly, I have a sick addiction to chocolate, but that’s for another post. Since I’m pretty busy, I usually grab a quick lunch from a sandwich shop, deli or my all-time favorite restaurant Ritzys. Ritzy’s has the best salad in town for a fast food restaurant I think. Each time I drive by Ritzy’s, however, I have noticed this restaurant in the old New York Subs building. Out of curiosity and a tip from a friend, I headed to Salad World this week.

As I walked in I realized it was very small, dark, and was making an attempt to be fancy with the cross-hatched room divider. I was a little turned off and actually worried I had made a mistake.

As I walked to the counter I was abruptly stopped by the waitress asking if I was getting carry out and pointed to menus on a table behind me. I was confused since there was a menu on the wall behind the counter. However, I noticed the wall menu didn’t list any of the actual salads—odd since it’s Salad World.

Looking over the menu, I saw they listed their salads with photos on the front of the menu: salmon and asparagus salad, endive salad, grilled shrimp salad, and a handful of others that all looked delicious. They offered fresh soups to full entrees, though I was actually focused on the grilled pitas and wraps. Sure, the place is Salad World, but you can always judge the quality of a restaurant by trying their non-specialties. Salad world had several wraps available including California, Caesar, and Chicken Salad.

I choose the Chicken Salad on a tomato wrap. On the wrap there was lettuce, tomato, and chicken salad. It was quite good. The chicken salad was mayonnaise based with walnuts and dried cherries in
it. It came with a side of coleslaw, although I’m sure that could be substituted or added to as there were other sides on the menu. Sound simple? I thought so. I don’t know what they do, but I took my first bite and instantly wanted more. It was delicious. I would go back in heartbeat.

A meal for just over $4.00 of coleslaw and a huge chicken salad wrap. Definitely go try it out.

Salad World is located at 519 E. Virginia Street; (812) 471-5083. It’s open from 11AM to 8PM Monday to Saturday. Closed Sunday.

Boehne Camp: Current Day Photos

When I got news from the Trespasser that the TB hospital is being renovated, I decided to make a trip out to the West side of town to see for myself. the Mills building is indeed under construction as while I was there, a worker dumped a massive pile of rubble out a window. I immediately noticed that each of the windows has new glass and trim. Many are also adorned with brand new black shutters.

I didn’t venture inside the building, but hopefully these exterior shots are interesting enough to whet your appetite for more.

Boehne Camp: Evansville’s Abandoned Tuberculosis Hospital

With all of the news in the past week about Andrew Speaker, the Atlanta attorney who was diagnosed with Tuberculosis (TB) and then flew to Greece to be married, we thought we’d share a bit of Evansville’s history and how it relates to this story. In case you don’t know, tuberculosis is an infectious disease that affects the lungs and nervous system. It can be transferred via cough, sneeze, spit, kiss or even speaking, which is why it was highly unintelligent of Mr. Speaker to take a trans-continental flight while infected.

During the early 1900s it was an epidemic, but today is treatable using antibiotics in many cases. There is a strand of TB known as drug resistant tuberculosis that can withstand the main antibiotics used to treat TB, isoniazid and rifampin. Since 2000, there have only been 17 cases of extreme drug-resistant TB, which Speaker is infected with.

So where does Evansville fit in?

Goodbye Abandoned Houses: You’re Being Demolished

With all the construction that is going on this summer, we’d like to take time to talk about demolition. Neighborhood Inspection Services is going through the process of tagging nearly 50 abandoned homes around the Evansville area for demolition this summer. If you’ve been to some parts of the city, you can probably spot the abandoned, run down houses I’m talking about.

How exactly does the NIS determine whether to put a home on the list you ask? Workers must first decide if the damage is more than 50 percent of the value. They evaluate damage by looking at windows, siding, trim and the foundation.

The demolition derby is set to begin in the next 45 days. Remember kids, part of progress is not only building new things, but getting rid of gross old things as well.
