After hearing my cousin offer nothing but good reviews of The Tin Fish, I decided to try it for dinner tonight.. Located in Jennings Station of Newburgh, The Tin Fish is at the top of the hill in the back of the parking lot that the Station and Old Country Store share. Contrary to what I thought, this restaurant is actually a chain located in California, Washington, Minnesota, Florida and of course, Indiana
There is nothing spectacular about the exterior or interior, but it seems to be capturing the overall feel perfectly. Casual, understated, tasty. Outside there is porch which was filled with people sipping on beer and eating their dinners when I got there. Inside is simply decorated with a few paintings on the wall with some ocean decorations painted onto the wall.
This is not a sit and order restaurant, instead you go to the counter and order off of the overhead menu, take your number, and sit at a table of your choosing. They bring your order to you and very quickly, we waited five minutes tops. The only thing is that I wish they brought both our meals together instead of one at a time, but other tables had their food brought out together, so it may have just been us. I ordered the “Our Famous Fish Sandwich Plate” for $5.95 and my dad decided on the “Mixed Seafood Grill” for $13.95.
The Fish Sandwich is two pieces of fried cod on a toasted bun, topped with a small amount of tartar sauce and drizzle with the perfect amount of hot sauce. On the side came a sweet slaw and seasoned waffle fries. For being such casual food in a laid back place, I thought this was just outstanding, especially the fish-it was perfect! My dad’s came with small filets of salmon, swordfish, mahi-mahi as well as shrimp and scallops with a side of the sweet slaw. He said he enjoyed everything on the plate and that it had a nice spice to it. His only hold up was the swordfish, which he felt was too dense and thin.
The bulk of the menu is made up of fried and grilled platters of various seafoods ranging from tilapia and orange roughy to calamari and frog legs. For something different, they offer seafood burritos and tacos-mahi-mahi taco, anyone? Don’t worry, they also have burger and chicken entrees for land lovers as well as salads. Entrees range from $3 to $15 dollars, maybe a touch expensive for such a casual place, but then again, they have to fly all this already pricey fish in. I thought it was definitely good enough to pay that amount for and am looking forward to going back.
The Tin Fish can be found at 300 West Jennings St. in Newburgh. 812-490-7000. 7 days a week, 11am-8pm.
