Following up on the Jazz, Wine & Art Festival is news that a new wine and dessert establishment will be opening in late October. Called Taste: A Wine And Dessert Bar it will be in the lower level of the Baynham’s Shoe Co. building at 323 Main St.

Taste will feature fifty-six different kinds of wines as well as cheesecakes and pies. You can get a sneak peak of the inside of the place during the Jazz, Wine & Art Festival this weekend.

This sounds somewhat similar to my favorite place at Purdue, Capp & Ginos. They had an awesome little wine & dessert bar upstairs. I loved that cheese plate.

Yes, it’s Clockwork Orange quote day. I’m obsessed with Mr. Alexander

Mr. Alexander Suggests You Try the Wine at the Jazz, Wine & Arts Festival

A few weeks ago when I wrote about what I thought the Freedom Festival should become, a few commenters suggested I wanted it to turn into the Jazz, Wine & Arts Festival that is taking place this Saturday. The one-day celebration will showcase non-stop entertainment and art in the heart of Evansville’s downtown district.

The festival will run from 11AM to 7PM on Saturday and will feature wine samplings from area wineries such as Carousel Winery and Oliver Winery among others. Food will be offered by Firefly, Just Rennie’s and Biaggi’s.

Local music will take place on three different stages and will feature Cynthia MacDonald & Bob Green, Matt Clark and Reunion Trio. The Indiana University Jazz Ensemble are slated to headline the event. Advance tickets are $15 for individuals, $25 for couples until Saturday, when the price goes up $5.

East Side Review: Grand Traverse Pie Company

Apologies for the food reviewing hiatus; really, I will try to be better! I’m sure most of you have noticed a new restaurant on Burkhardt Avenue. The Grand Traverse Pie Company is a small chain, that offers sandwiches, salads, and of course pie among other things.

The decoration inside seems to bring to mind a slight take of something you might find in the north Midwest. A little dark, wood features, and plants are throughout the restaurant. Its casual and simply, but the tables at a little packed in. When you enter, you immediately see a large display of pies. Just down the counter, you order your food. However, this area is extremely cramped during the rush hours, and there is an oddly placed high top table that is somewhat in the way. Just like Panera, you pick up your food at a different spot further down the counter.

Other than sandwiches and salads, the menu also offers wraps, soups, quesadillas, quiches, and potpies. I have been there a number of times now, and have tried several things. The first time I tried the Grand Traverse Club that consists of turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese, and pesto sauce on Sourdough bread. I’m not a big fan of sandwiches, but I thought this was a pretty good sandwich in part due to the pesto sauce that was a different but good idea. My sister has tried the chicken quesadilla and my father devoured the Cherry Chicken Salad (romaine, chicken, tomato, cucumber, feta, parmesan, and dried cherries). Both were deemed to be quite good, although they had a hard time with me sisters request of no tomatoes. I’ve tried all three quiches, which are okay; they are good for the type of restaurant, although I wish they were firmer, and the Spinach Mushroom Quiche is my favorite. The Stuffed Pepper Soup is also quite good.

Surprisingly, I have found the pie to be hit or miss. I tried the Lakeshore Berry pie, which is a mix of strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, and apple. Despite the blend sounding so appealing, I didn’t really prefer it and found it to be really tart. On the other hand, my aunt loved the Strawberry Rhubarb pie. My sister and tried the chocolate cream pie but felt it was too thick and mousse-like. It was okay, but not what we would consider a good chocolate pie. I liked the lemon meringue, although it was extremely tart. The apple crumb was great, and the banana cream was fantastic.

Even though it opened recently, I think the Pie Company has already worked out a lot of the typical new restaurant kinks. The food is pretty good and has a lot of good ideas, although sometimes I think the quality of food could be bumped up a notch. Clearly, having eaten here a handful of times, I enjoy it. The menu is rather extensive and there is plenty to have something different to try each time.

The Grand Traverse Pie Company is located at 6245 Vogel Rd. (812) 477-7437. Mon-Thurs 7am-9pm, Fri & Sat 7am-10pm, Sun 8am-9pm.

Who Needs Power Anyway?

While I was in Nashville yesterday, I got warning that it was a pretty window day here in Evansville. Driving back I saw the tree limbs scattered along the streets and many parts of town without power: including my house. I’m still without power this morning and have sought refuge at my favorite Starbucks by Eastland Mall.

For this week’s Plugged In, I want to do a quick segment on this and suggest things to do when the power is out. Help me out. Try to be creative with this one. I don’t just want a straight list. If I use it on the air, I’ll give you credit.

My suggestion: lassoing the cat with your Ethernet cable.

It’s the 70’s All Over Again

It’s Evansville reader Curtis McNeely sent these in a few days ago, but it’s from the Kangaroo Express at Stringtown and Petersburg Rd in Evansville. It’s not the first shortage I’ve seen over the weekend either. I was in Nashville and several pumps had brown bags over them because they were actually out of fuel.

Drill, baby, drill?

Plugged in Episode 01 Podcast Available

If you’d like to listen to the first episode of my radio show, Plugged In, you can download it directly from the Website or subscribe to the new podcast. I’ve submitted the podcast to iTunes, so if someone wants to fast track it over there, I’d appreciate it.

On the first episode I had on David Chartier of Ars Technica to talk about the Apple announcements from earlier in the week and Dr. W.R. Mack, a political science professor at the University of Southern Indiana, to discuss how the new media information we are posting today might affect the future political candidate.

How did the first show go? I think the content is interesting and close to where I want it to be. I still think I have a ways to go to be an interesting and engaging host. It’s not bad for being my first real show ever though. Radio really exposes what words you crutch on in the English language. I really need to work on that.

Last time I’ll self promote this on here for a while.

Quincy Is Back on the Air Thanks to RTN25

While I enjoyed the premieres of Fringe and Entourage this week, there’s something nostalgic about watching awful TV from the late 70’s and 80s. WEHT has finally put their digital channel to use for something besides a live weather radar with RTN25. You can tune in as appropriate:

  • Over the Air 25-2
  • Insight: Channel 437
  • WOW: Channel 111
  • Time Warner: Channel 311 & 184

The Retro Television Network features the B-list celebrity equivalent of classic television. Quincy, Kojak, The Incredible Hulk and the original Knight Rider. How awesome is that? RTN also distributes Harry & The Hendersons and 21 Jump Street, so hopefully someone at 25 can put that on the programming schedule.

Also, Alf. ‘Nuff said.

American Idol Coming to Evansville

00015533.jpg

I was recently informed that people still watch American Idol. Who knew? The latest cast of wannabe pop stars has been on a summer long tour of the US so that housewives and their children can see their favorite contestant live and in person.

I’m not exactly sure of the appeal of a live concert featuring these people and a catalog of Neil Diamond songs. The one season I watched the show, it was mainly for the enjoyment of Simon Cowell crushing the dream of a potential young starlet. Now that the show has jumped the shark a bit with, the dancing, sideshow and lip syncing variations, I just can’t get too excited about this stuff.

If you wanna go, it’s Thursday night, 7PM, at Roberts Stadium. Tickets run from $35 to $70. Last I heard there were still some good seats left, so grab ‘em up.
