Shameless Plug: New Column Online

The latest edition of my Courier & Press technology column is both in the print and online editions of today’s paper. Each Friday I write about what I’ve encountered in the past week technology wise. It’s really a giant scam to justify the amount of time I spend on the Internet.

This week’s column highlights Apple’s new offerings at Macworld and what I think of them. You can read it by clicking here, or go pick up a copy of the paper so you can see my mug shot up close and personal.

Checking in From Macworld

Greetings from sunny San Francisco! I’m still out here at Macworld and having a great time.

The show itself has been a great this year. Apple’s new MacBook Air is an incredibly thing to actually see in person. The hard-drive based versions are only on display, however. There is an option for an Air using flash memory, that is a mere .16” thick. After holding the hard drive based one, that just seems insane. There’s a lot of stuff I want to write about, but it just seems to overwhelming at this point that I can’t figure out where to start.

I had planned to take photos, but I have been too busy and also didn’t feel like lugging my camera gear around the expo hall all day. Luckily, Flickr takes care of everything for me. Check these photos out.

I’ll be returning to Evansville tomorrow night. Hopefully the snow will be gone.

It’s Evansville has had a group on Facebook for quite a while, but with Facebook’s new pages functionality, I thought it fitting to create one for It’s Evansville. There’s not much on there yet, but I’m hoping to add more in the future.

Shameless Plug: Mac OS X Leopard Review

This week is my super-sized Mac OS X Leopard review. I’ve been using the new OS in beta form for the past two months, and invested 800 words into describing the entire experience. You can read it by clicking here, or go pick up a copy of the paper so you can see my mug shot up close and personal.

And don’t forget, you can get a copy of my new Mac OS X Leopard book, Getting StartED with Mac OS X Leopard at your local or online bookstore.

Happy Leopard Day!

I’ve been a Mac user since early 2001 when the first revision of Mac OS X was released. I saw Windows as a sinking ship in terms of innovation and the allure of the Mac’s glossy new operating system was too much to resist. Almost 7 years later, and I don’t have a single regret about switching to the 8% side of the market.

Apple today is releasing their sixth revision of Mac OS X, 10.5 Leopard. In the same time, Microsoft has released a single update: Vista. Apple touts over 300 new features, but some stick out more than others:

  • Time Machine: Apple’s built-in backup solution, which incrementally backs up the contents of your hard drive, so you can jump back in time and recover files and folders.
  • Spaces: Multiple monitors are nice but take up a lot of space. Spaces let’s you create virtual monitors, so you can segregate the various activities you perform on your Mac to different desktops.
  • Quick Look: This is my favorite major feature. You no longer need to open Word and Excel just to see what’s inside a file. Quick Look lets you browse the contents of various types of files to see what’s contained inside it instantly.
  • Boot Camp: Apple’s offered Boot Camp in beta form for Mac OS X Tiger users, but Leopard introduces the final version of their technology to dual boot both Mac OS X and Windows.

I’ve been using the OS exclusively for the past few months as I finished writing my new book, Getting StartED with Mac OS X Leopard. I’ll have my full review of the new OS in next Friday’s Courier & Press.
