In Focus

While this picture has no photographic merit, I saw it while scouring through Flickr today, and couldn’t resist publishing it for In Focus. Flickr user djh644 snapped this photo of a marquee at a local Dairy Queen earlier this summer advertising a unique kind of Fathers Day cake. From looking at the Flickr map, I think this is the DQ that is only seasonally open on Franklin. Be sure to go in there and try to buy a mushroom swiss cake.

Flickr user Jeremy G. Soper shines light on another area of our city that might need a bit of maintenance. Downtown Evansville has these neat intersection placards, but the paint has been peeling off them for years. I will be starting my own campaign to alleviate this: Street Sights Before Sewers & Stadiums!

Flickr user toddland has an awesome photo set called Decomposition. I selected the photo above because it is of a house on First Street downtown and is definitely one of my favorites. You should check out his other work in the set because its beautiful.

Flickr user wolf.brian checks in for this week’s In Focus with a shot of some rubble surrounding Evansville’s State Hospital.

If you want some more neat photos from the state hospital, I found this link the other day.

Keep the photos coming!

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Photo Collection on Display

A unique collection of photographs featuring Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis will be displayed on Friday, August 17 from 5-8PM at the Old National Bank headquarters in downtown Evansville. The event, sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, will mostly feature photos taken from 1959-1960 during John F. Kennedy’s Senatorial and White House years.

The collection also consists of twenty-one private photos taken by Jacques Lowe, an internationally renowned photographer who gifted his work to the Society in 1998 as a tribute to Onassis. Only these prints remain as the negatives for this collection were destroyed in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11.

The photography display is open to the public at no charge. Donations will be accepted at the door but are not required. For more information, contact Jen Thelen with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at 800-955-2566.

Flickr user, and It’s Evansville food editor, Jenna, checks in with this week’s In Focus. She took her camera around town and snapped up photos of the downtown monuments. This one is my favorite and highlights a few of the state blocks that surround our Four Freedom’s Monument.

Good job!

I’m a sucker for black and white photography. With that in mind, this week’s In Focus photograph comes from Flickr user ZRX1200R. I’m not sure what building in Evansville this is, but the photo definitely draws you in.

Flickr user andyrobe gets In Focus back on track with this shot of a decaying door and window somewhere around town. The composition on the photo is fantastic in my opinion and the blue definitely pops.

I’m not exactly sure where in Evansville this was shot, so if you know, leave a comment and let the rest of us know.

Don't mess with a sign producer

As I was running downtown this morning, I ran by the sign shop across from the Executive Inn and noticed this sign out front. I couldn’t NOT go back and snap a photo for you guys.

Thunder has come and gone, but not without a lot of excitement. Three heats in a row saw three different boats flip over. In the end Dave Villwock in the Miss Elam boat took the win.

Here’s some photos from today’s action.
