We all have our favorite hangouts in town. Whether it be the big bar everyone goes to on Saturday night or just the small joint a few blocks from where you live that you often frequent. Use this open thread to tell everyone about your favorite bar in town.

Which bar is it? Why do you like it? What makes it unique? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Open Thread: Thoughts on Free Speech

For the past month one of the biggest stories nationwide is the debate on free speech and the radio. It started with the firing of Don Imus for uttering the phrase nappy headed hoes in reference to the Rutger’s Women’s Basketball team. Al Sharpton and other special interest groups lobbied for and succeeded in having Imus removed not only from MSNBC but also CBS radio. Another DJ was also fired for repeating Imus’ naughty phrase.

Imus’ firing was followed by the firing of New York’s JV & Elvis for airing a prank phone call to a chinese restaurant that used the phrase Flied Lice in an attempt to make fun of how Chinese people speak. A Chinese special interest group lobbied for and succeeded in having JV & Elvis fired from CBS radio.

The latest controversy being stirred is by nationally syndicated hosts Opie & Anthony. They are in hot water for having a homeless man on the air who said he wanted to have sex with US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice (Explicit Audio Here). Unlike the other incidents, this was said on XM Satellite Radio. The radio duo apologized on both their CBS and XM shows, but was suspended for 30 days today by the Satellite company.

This is a national debate and talking heads are all spreading their opinion, but what’s your opinion? Are these firings justified or do you think it is the politically correct police running amok? Do you think we will see any sort of backlash in the Evansville radio market? Let’s discuss in the comments.

Open Thread: What to Get Mom for Mothers Day

Mothers Day is coming up this Sunday, and I have nothing to get my mother for a gift. I’ve already given her the standard gifts before: chocolates, cards, iPods, gift certificates. I need something new. I need something fun. I need creativity.

Because of this, I come to you, my dear It’s Evansville readers for help. Use this Open Thread and tell me what you are getting your mother to mothers day.

Ask It’s Evansville: What Should We Cover?

Obviously It’s Evansville is in its infancy, and we’re still gaining our footing, writing style and what not. We’ve shown a few of our cards with our coverage of news, weekend activity listings and Evansville 911. That’s not all we want to have on the site.

In fact, we have been working behind the scenes to schedule interviews with local musicians, artists and other interesting types to share their life and passions with you. We’re also planning to do reviews: theater, restaurants, movies, music, wine, etc. We may even do an audio or video podcast in the future.

Our ideas, while well intentioned, aren’t as important as knowing what you’re interested in seeing and reading. Are our ideas in tune with what you expect and want from It’s Evansville? Let us know. If they aren’t, what would you rather we cover? What will make you keep coming back to read out content? Help us tailor the future of the site.

What do you want us to cover?
