Up in Smoke: Evansville Hookah Bar Coming

9

Looking for something fun and different to do in Evansville? We’re getting a Hookah bar on the East side. What’s Hookah? It’s an Indian water pipe for smoking varieties of tobaccos, fruits and I’m sure other types of goods.

The new place, Charazad Hookah Lounge, will be located in the strip mall behind Acropolis and GD Ritzys. The location is a bit of a turnoff to me, as I’d rather something like this in the downtown area, but the foot traffic of the east side is hard to beat.

Charazad will open in about a month, so be sure to check it out.

City of Evansville Buys Building Adjacent to Alhambra Theatre

1

Roger McBain writing in The Courier & Press:

The city will pay $150,000 for an art gallery and a studio at 56 and 58 Adams Ave. and work with the Alhambra’s board of directors to provide the space for bathrooms, dressing rooms, meeting rooms or, perhaps, a black-box theater to attach to the historical Haynie’s Corner theater…The goal is to donate the property as part of a revitalized Alhambra project, considered the anchor for the Haynie’s Corner Arts District.

One of my favorite buildings in Evansville looks like it’s one step closer to restoration.

Birds in the Air! Is Your Plane Safe? Tonight at 10.

This isn’t as bad as some of the other stories I’ve seen on 25, but it’s ranks up there:

NEWS 25 Looks at Threat of Bird Strikes Locally:

After this week’s story of an airplane, splash-landing in the Hudson River in NYC, we wanted to know more about what caused the accident. Bird strikes can threaten all size of plane, in many areas across the country, so as this threat is brought into the limelight, we wanted to know what Tri-State pilots could face.

A few things that should be noted on this story. First, I am pretty sure there is nothing different between a bird and plane collision at EVV, JFK, ORD or any other small or large airport in the country. Second, I’m sure I’m not the only one that thinks it is slightly disingenuous to try to turn the focus of a national story locally as if there is some potential widespread pandemic of birds attacking jets.

If you want to do a news piece on the statistics and likelihood of something like this happening, fine. Just please stop with trying to prey on people’s fears and acting like anything and everything may come to haunt Evansville.

Russ Lloyd Jr. Returns to Public Service, Awaits Next Cher Concert

1

Before Jonathan Weinzapfel was at the helm of our fair city, a relatively quiet and low key guy was running the city, lobbying for a downtown baseball stadium and skipping city council meetings for Cher concerts. That’s right, folks. Russ Lloyd Jr is back in public service. Lloyd Jr. will be a member of the Vanderburgh County Council in 2009 and 2010. Lloyd will succeed 4th District Councilman Lloyd Winnecke and take the last two years of his term on the council.

You may not remember much about Lloyd’s tenure as mayor. I don’t think he broke anything while in office, but he didn’t accomplish much either. The high point (or low point depending on who you ask) was his appearance on the Daily Show back in 2003. Welcome back, Russ.

What’s in Your Driveway? a Stadium

From the Courier & Press:

A group of consulting companies has recommended that the city build a new arena at the D-Patrick Ford site that would cost between $117 million and $127 million.

HOK Sport of Kansas City recommended the site for its proximity to Main Street, access to parking and opportunities for additional economic development.

The arena would have a 12,000-seat capacity. Cost and funding plans have not yet been presented.

Sounds like a good location to me, but from the artist rendering it looks like they also want to take out Just Renne’s, Vision and the new Regent Communications offices and studios.

What say you?

Weekend News Wrapup

0

  • Thunder On The Ohio may not be dead just yet. The American Boat Racing Association board of directors voted to acquire the docks, boats and flatbeds that were owned by the Freedom Festival as a first step towards possibly hosting the race themselves next August or September. GAGE will still be holding a June summer festival, but a week earlier than normal.

  • Another case of if you can’t beat them at the polls, take them to court. Now the GOP is contesting Democrat Ed bassemeir’s election to County Council under the Hatch Act because he is the safety director at the Evansville Region Airport.

  • Remember when I said it looked like Aztar was going to get sold? Yeah, that’s not happening anymore.

Before the weekend, let’s cover some stuff.

  • Nothing like a park revitalization to make you feel good on a Friday. This time it’s Line Street Park. [C&P]

  • Looks like Aztar is going to be sold. If I were to buy it, I’d turn it into a parking lot. That dumb boat is an eyesore to the downtown area. [C&P]

  • You’ll have to pry those cheap gas prices from his cold, dead hands. [ABC25]

  • The Armadillos are coming. Seek shelter. [WFIE]

  • And for fun, here’s a truck on its side.

I needed a bit of a break to recharge my batteries, so let’s catch up on some stuff that has happened over the past few days.

  • Colin Powell to John McCain: Drop Dead
  • Mayor Weinzapfel has ordered the Evansville Fire Departments fleet of trucks to go under repair as part of a new maintenance standard.
  • As a whole, Indiana seems prepared for the elections. The only major flaw is we have inadequate laws when it comes to voter-verifiable paper records and post-election audit procedures.
  • It’s not Tom Hanks and Madonna, but it was another movie at Bosse Field over the weekend.
  • If you lost your Ford Explorer last July, it was found in the bottom of a lake.
  • College Basketball has officially started. BTFU

Finally, a Downtown Grocery

6

Now that I’m living downtown, my east side bias is going to slowly start shifting to the downtown sector. I’m working on a few longer pieces about what’s missing down here, but this looks like it may alleviate one of my major complaints:

Shoppers will soon be able to buy produce, fine cuts of meat, wines, fine cheeses, pastas and other groceries from a new store on Main Street.

Jan and Joe Anglin plan to open the Meridian Market in the Meridian Plaza, a building on the corner of Third and Main streets. The Kunkel Group began building 31 condominiums there in 2007. All but two of them have been sold, a fact that will give the Anglins an immediate opportunity to find customers.

I am really hoping it will be the small town equivalent of a Whole Foods with comparable prices. I currently just drive over to the First Avenue Schnucks to pick up food, but if I could just walk a block next door, that’d be awesome. Let’s just hope they have the prices within the Whole Foods & Target range.

The story also mentions that Strattmans is starting to stock groceries. Unfortunately, the pharmacy is closed at 5PM, so it’s hard to do any sort of real shopping unless you are someone like me who doesn’t have set office hours.

Happy Fall Festival week everyone. I hope you’ll be taking your Bingo cards and eating far too much greasy food on the West side this week.

  • If you are planning to vote, today is the last day to register.
  • Speaking of the presidential race, both candidates are putting a ton of time in Indiana this year as we are actually a battleground state for once. Obama will be in Indy on Wednesday while McCain is adding more staff to Indiana. Can we please get Sarah to visit Evansville. That’s all I want.
  • While our local banks aren’t being affected by the economic crisis, UE is. They do a lot of business with Wachovia, one of the failed banks, and 80% of their their short-term funds with the bank are not available at present.
  • Even though we are trying to replace it, Roberts Stadium is still turning a profit.
