Interview: Stephen Horning of Namasté

One of the things many people notice about the Evansville music scene is that it is known for its cover bands. It seems like anytime you walk into a bar you’re going to be hearing the same cover of a Guns N Roses or Big & Rich song. Not all bands are doing cover songs, though. We caught up with Stephen Horning, the lead singer of Namasté. Namasté is a local band playing all original tunes.

How long has Namasté been together?

We’re coming up on our 9th year. We got together more out of necessity than anything. There aren’t that many musicians around the area that play the style of music we do. I was actually coming back from Boston where I had lived for quite a while. I was trying to figure out what to do with my musical abilities and I ran out of money. A buddy of mine had met a few of the guys from the band. They were, at the time, playing in a cover band around town. He introduced them to me the night I came back from Boston and we decided to start jamming together.

Did you start out playing original music or as a cover band?

The original intention was to play original music. We used covers to get to know each other since we all knew how to play the songs. We started writing songs immediately, and as soon as we had enough original material to play a show with, we started trying to get gigs.

Summer of Rock: Papa Roach Coming to Evansville

Who saw this coming? I’ve got news about another modern rock act coming to Evansville this summer. It just came across from Geffen Records that Papa Roach will be coming to Roberts Stadium this summer as well. Papa Roach will be playing Roberts Stadium July 15 with opening act Hinder.

You may know Papa Roach from their mainstream hits, Last Resort, Scars or from the opening theme of WWE Raw.

No word on when tickets will be going on sale, but I’ll be sure to let you know.

Tool Coming June 17

I was having a conversation the other day about how the only acts that tend to come to down are mainstream country acts (see Brad Paisley) or washed up rockers (see Ted Nugent). It’s frustrating at a 20-something who likes listening to modern and indie rock that I have to drive 2-3 hours to listen to music I like.

Every now and then, SMG and the other local promoters throw people like me a bone, and in this case, it is the just announced show at Roberts Stadium fearing Tool in June. Tool produced one of my favorite albums of the 90’s with their 1996 release Ænima and has been producing great albums since.

The concert will be at Roberts Stadium June 17 starting at 8PM. Tickets can be purchased at The Roberts Stadium and The Centre box offices or Ticketmaster starting at 10PM on Saturday.

Roller Derby Benefit at Lanhucks

We here at It’s Evansville like to support things that are a little different and unique. We like unique music. We like artists that think outside of the box. We like food that goes beyond the standard chain food. We also like a group of girls who skate and slam into each other. That is certainly different, and we support it!

The Demolition City Roller Derby team is having a benefit show this weekend to help get the team off the ground and hopefully playing matches in the near future. The benefit will be at Lanhucks (321 E Columbia Evansville, IN 47711 812-424-0830) Sunday night at 8PM. The team will be there as well as several local bands such as Stationary Odyssey, eXesion and my personal favorite, The Pretentious Wankers. Besides listening to live music and roller derby chicks, Lanhucks will also have PBR for $1.50.

Cover is $3 at the door.

We interviewed the co-founder of the team, Molly Hartshorn, last month. You can read about it here.
