Music Spotlight: Pieces of the Day
It’s Evansville is starting a new recurring feature that will spotlight local and regional musicians that are playing shows around Evansville. If you are a local musician, contact It’s Evansville editor Justin Williams to schedule your profile.
What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?
Matt Camp: The name of the band is “Pieces of the Day” it was (and still is) a song title for a song I wrote.
How long have you been together?
Matt Camp: We’ve been at it for two years now.
Who is in the band and what instruments do they play?
Matt Camp: I am on Lead guitar and backing vocals. Shawn Brashear does Lead vocals and acoustic guitar. Corey Overby plays the drums. Daryl Nurrenbern plays bass. Keyboard player coming soon!!
How did you get together?
Matt Camp: I met Shawn at music store in Owensboro. We jammed there once and knew there was a future there making music.I started making phone calls. I called Corey first. I played with in another band years before. I called Daryl next. I saw him play at least three years before and liked his playing. It took a while but I tracked him down. I got lucky. They were the first people I called to be the rhythm section and they both accepted!
What type of music do you prefer playing?
Matt Camp: We all have different taste(not even necessarily what “Pieces of the Day” plays) The music we play live really just reflects what our frontman excels at.
What band(s) do you most sound like?
Matt Camp: Hard to say. We cover everything from Al Green to Aerosmith and from Dave Matthews to Nine Inch Nails.
Where is the best place to play in town and why?
Matt Camp: I think I’ll leave this one alone. We all have our preferences for different reasons but we have been treated great ALMOST everywhere. We don’t want to rub any bar owners who may read this the wrong way.
What is your favorite song to play live? Why?
Matt Camp: We love doing Dave Mathhews and U2 for sure.
Who’s your favorite local band (besides your own)?
Matt Camp: We don’t really get to see a lot of other bands because we’ve been so busy but there are definitely a lot of musicians in this town with huge talent that we respect. I could name some but once again I’m afraid I’d forget someone. The amount of talent in this little town no one has heard of is remarkable!!
What are your musical aspirations?
Matt Camp: To increase our popularity and keep trying to make our shows steadily more and more entertaining for everyone who come out to see us.
Where can we see you play around town?
Matt Camp: We are currently playing O’Brian’s, Woody’s, Fast Eddy’s, Club Royale and Deerhead.
