Last nights small crowd can’t describe what kind of show was going on inside of Woody’s Main Street bar. 99.5 WKDQ is bringing Evansville some great entertainment at an unbeatable price. The first show they had a few months back featured James Otto, who is a new comer out of Nashville. 99.5 And Woody’s are trying to bring the honky tonk lifestyle to Evansville, which is great. Something none of us would be able to experience unless we drive down to Nashville.
Last nights show which was only 18 dollars to get in the door had 3 pretty great bands. First up was Red Eye Max out of Bloomington. They had competed in the Kenny Chesney “Next Big Star” competition and seemed to have a small following. I personally didn’t care for their country rock sound and was also annoyed when they bashed 99.5 for not playing their song on the radio. Maybe it is because it sounds exactly like Keith Urban’s , ” You Look Good In My Shirt.” It was awful.
Next up was local favorite Jason Clutter. This was my first time seeing him, but he seems to have a very large following in the area. He played a few of his own songs which were ok. His band was great and didn’t miss a note. He also played a long list of covers including sing along favorites, “Fishing in the Dark.”
The main man last night was Luke Bryan bringing down the bar. You may know some of his top 10 hits, “Country Man” “All My Friends Say” and “We Rode In Trucks” Bryan, who just finished up his summer tour with Kenny Chesney on the Poets and Pirates tour, was welcomed by Evansville’s favorite radio personality Lori Mae. Never having been to a small show like this I didn’t know what to expect. I must say it was awesome. He wanted to be there as much as all of us. His stage presence was hilarious, dancing around and messing with the band. He played a long list of great covers including “Mountain Music”, “Good Directions” and an awesome version of Collective Soul’s “Shine.” We also got to hear some of his forthcoming songs , which sounded great.
Luke ended up playing close to 2 hours. As the night was coming to an end he was dancing around stage with his Flip video camera filming the crowd and band going crazy. He ended the show with the Brooks & Dunn mega hit, “Play Something Country.”
The next cheap seats concert will feature, The Lost Trailers, November 20 at Woody’s.
I was recently informed that people still watch American Idol. Who knew? The latest cast of wannabe pop stars has been on a summer long tour of the US so that housewives and their children can see their favorite contestant live and in person.
I’m not exactly sure of the appeal of a live concert featuring these people and a catalog of Neil Diamond songs. The one season I watched the show, it was mainly for the enjoyment of Simon Cowell crushing the dream of a potential young starlet. Now that the show has jumped the shark a bit with, the dancing, sideshow and lip syncing variations, I just can’t get too excited about this stuff.
If you wanna go, it’s Thursday night, 7PM, at Roberts Stadium. Tickets run from $35 to $70. Last I heard there were still some good seats left, so grab ‘em up.
Kenny Chesney blew the roof off of Roberts Stadium Thursday evening along with Gary Allan. Gary Allan proved his status when everyone in the parking lot made the early trip in to check out his headlining set. With mixed reviews coming in throughout town I would just like to say that Gary Allan is one the most up and coming stars today. With his unique style he has made a footprint that isn’t going away anytime soon.
Playing hits such as Airplanes, Wrecking Ball and Songs About Rain, he kept the crowd rowdy for Kenny.
After a brief intermission the lights dimmed with the bright orange kabuki lighting up the entire stadium to reveal an amazing video display. The 9000 plus funs were on there feet the entire night. Chesney rose up from under the stage to the #1 hit Live Those Songs Again. Being the Chesnut (editor: Chesnut may be the lamest term I’ve ever heard) I am, I knew pretty much what the entire set list was going to be from reading about previous shows.
To my surprise Chesney came out after a ballad and gave us something no one expected, an impromptu set of songs that he has “never” played in a live show before. Struggling to remember the chords you knew this was going to be a special moment. I was in awe knowing that we were special enough to get such a treat. With only him and Wyatt Beard on the keyboard they went through a small set of classics including Be As You Are and The Woman With You.
This was by far the best concert I have ever been to besides the keg show I saw in Panama City Bach. It was worth every penny I spent on my tickets. It’s true what Chesney says: each year his band tries to put on a show that is crazier than the last. This was true Thursday night with a sold out crowd. If you missed out be sure to catch up with Kenny Chesney at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis September 13.
Tomorrow is the big day. Country music superstar Kenny Chesney returns to Evansville from a 2-year hiatus. Come out and join us for a day full of good times. We will have some food grilling and corn hole tournaments. We will be set up in the front parking lot of Roberts Stadium starting at 1:00 Pm. Kenny Chesney and Gary Allan will be performing at 7:00PM. A few tickets are still available through Ticketmaster.
Come out and get your free It’s Evansville sticker and some food. Any pictures you take make sure you upload them to Flickr and tag with itsevansville. It may be featured on the site.
While I’m as excited as the next heterosexual male that Kenny Chesney is coming to Roberts Stadium next month, I can’t help but grow tired of the same old country, southern and 70’s rock acts that come through Evansville. This summer looks to be a bit of a departure.
Tickets go on sale next Friday for two concerts. The first features singer-songwriter Bob Dylan who will perform at Mesker Amphitheater on August 24. Tickets start at $22 for lawn seats. Also on sale Friday are tickets for the 3 Doors Down/Finger Eleven concert at Roberts Stadium on July 29. Tickets start at $39.50 for that show. I am not exactly sure how two mainstream rock acts draw a higher ticket price than a legend, but I’ll chalk it up to the bigger stadium.
I get a fair amount of news tips throughout the week for the site, but this is by far the greatest one I have ever received. Last night a guy named Mark emailed me with his thoughts on the Five Finger Death Punch concert at Woody’s last night.
I went to the Five Finger Death Punch concert in Louisville 2 weeks ago and it was one of the best Metal shows I had ever been to. They have a special, and somewhat renowned talent for inciting a very active mosh pit and participant crowd, and have a drummer from Boonville!
I just returned from 5 finger in Evansville at Woody’s and it was just like I feared; no mosh allowed, and a somewhat stifled show as a result! It was the only concert I’ve seen with no encore; probably because of the weak crowd, which wasn’t weak because of the fans, but because of the security/police presence.
How a mosh-famous band like 5 Finger could be reduced to a jumpity security fest, I don’t know, it wasn’t the bands fault, they tried.
Congrats WGBF, Woody’s, and Evansville for successfully embarrassing the drummer of one of the best up-and-coming rock bands in his home town. From the footage and the experience I’ve seen of the band, Evansville, Woody’s and WGBF had to be one of, if not the, weakest stop on their tour.
I swore after seeing Motley Crew at Roberts and being forced to stay in my seat like an old man, that I would never go to a concert in Evansville again, but honestly thought this would be different, because the nature of the band and the proximity of the crowd to the band, but no; Evansville, Woody’s, and WGBF sucks lame pussy no-moshing dicks.
Go get your radio station and concert bar there Evansville Alice…
Last concert I EVER go to in Evansville PERIOD!
And I am not alone. The three guys I rode home with, and everyone I was next to at the concert agrees! You suck Evansville! Stick to American Idol and country!
I think my favorite line in this entire thins is “Congrats WGBF, Woody’s, and Evansville for successfully embarrassing the drummer of one of the best up-and-coming rock bands in his home town.” I wasn’t aware that Boonville was a hotbed for new metal acts.
What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?
Rebel Fuel Tank – Dustin was on a trip to Nashville and he found a shot glass that said Rebel Fuel Tank on it. It seemed to fit and if I don’t say so myself I love our band name and think it fits well.
How long have you been together?
The current line up has been playing for about 8 months, but we have all played in different bands with each other in various forms for about 6 years.
Who is in the band and what instruments do they play?
Dustin White – vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica
Nathan Vaughn – rhythm guitar, backing vocals
Scott McClure – lead guitar, backing vocals
Matt Lynn “Moose” – drums, percussion
Larry Morris – bass, backing vocals
How did you get together?
Dustin and I started a band called Union Shovel in 2002. It was really the catalyst for what we do now. We took a break from that around 2004 and I started a band with Moose called Bumpin’ Uglies. We soon got Dustin as our singer and we played out for a short time. After that Dustin and Vaughn got together and started Rebel Fuel Tank. Shortly after that I rejoined and then Moose and we rounded out the lineup with Larry who had actually jammed with the earliest version of Rebel Fuel Tank. Crazy – you might need a graph to help you follow that one.
What type of music do you prefer playing?
I’m sure everyone in the band has a different answer to that but I think we all agree that we have the most fun playing our originals. We really believe strongly in our music and our creative process. When we’re playing our originals live and it connects with the band and the crowd there is no better feeling
Who do you most sound like?
Rebel Fuel Tank. It doesn’t matter if we are playing an original or a cover, we have a distinctive sound and we always sound like Rebel Fuel Tank. We blend elements of so many different styles (outlaw country, southern rock, classic rock, metal) and make it our own. But in the end we are a down and dirty rock and roll band through and through (as it should be).
Where is the best place to play in town?
We are thankful for every place we get to play and throw a party at. Much respect to everyone who has given RFT a chance. But if I had to pick one, for me personally it’s Lanhucks. They’ve always treated us well, Pam and Jim are great and it’s always a party.
What is your favorite song to play live?
Every single one of them. As soon as the first note of a song hits we just let loose and enjoy the ride. There’s nothing better than playing live music.
Whose your favorite local band (besides your own)?
I support all of the local bands – there are so many that do a fantastic job. Shut Up and Drive, Akacia, Metal Masquerade Ball, Stompbox 40, Troy Miller and Nocturnal (get back together) just to name a few.
What are your musical aspirations?
To leave it all on stage each and every time we play. We want the crowd at every show to have as much fun as we do. There is nothing better for us than playing music and we want to translate that to everyone who comes to see us. Every show we play is a party. We just want to keep writing new and better material and keep exposing it to as many people as possible by taking it to the road.
Where can we see you play around town?
Lanhucks, Hob Knob Bar, Hobo Jungle, Duck Inn, Late Nites in Jasper and a lot of others that are currently in the works. Give us a chance to play and we’ll be there to blow the roof off. Check us out our My Space at MySpaceMusic – keyword Rebel Fuel Tank.
What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?
We are As Forever Fades from Evansville/Newburgh Indiana. Our names was created to show that modern metal music can have more depth and progression intertwined.
How long have you been together?
The founding of AFF was over two years ago. A total line-up change of the members has occurred since then. Since the completion of musicians it has been about 6 months and over that course of time we have composed 6 songs and played a variety of shows across the midwest.
Band members consist of Trent Thompson (recently added member and guitarist age 17), Jon Munnier (bassist age 23), Seth Jackson (guitarist age 17), Jeremy Luman (vocalist age 19), Ryan Weisjahn (drummer age 16).
How did you get together?
Most of the history of this band relied upon luck. Our bassist contacted AFF proclaiming that he had a degree in audio recording from the Conservatory in Arizona and was quickly inducted into the band. Guitarist Trent Thompson has been friends with Jeremy Luman and Seth Jackson and was inducted in the band based on his musical talent and performance. Ryan Weisjahn joined AFF several months ago and has been performing in piano recitals, marching band, winter drumline, and jazz band for years.
What type of music do you prefer playing?
As Forever Fades is sticking to a progressive form of Metal that relies upon driving verses, punctuated breakdowns, and ranging vocal patterns. The musical genre we could most closely be classified into is a new breed known as Breakbeat.
What band do you most sound like?
As I Lay Dying, Lamb of God, and Job For A Cowboy are what we have been compared to in our writing style.
The size and quality of Boney Junes far surpasses any other local venue. They are definitely our favorite place to play at in town and always seem to have a good/active crowd.
What is your favorite song to play live? Why?
I think our song “Words Unclear,” which will be featured on our upcoming EP due in the summer, is our most exhilarating song. It’s got a terrific introduction, a powerful breakdown, a progressive verse, and a set of solos that really define it as one of our best pieces.
Who is your favorite local band?
Deliver Us From Evil definitely. They are our best friends and have much more talent than anyone in this area. We can’t wait until something good comes their way because they deserve it!
What are your musical aspirations?
We would love to become an Indie Label band. Fame would be great but fortune isn’t everything for us. The enjoyment we receive from playing shows for a crowd that respects and surprises us is an exceptional reward for us in AFF. Eventually, our bassist would love to retire from his daily job and start his recording studio but this can only happen when the band has enough drive to support our lives.
Where can we see you play around town?
Boney Junes, private parties, and bars here in the near future (even though only one of us is over the age of 21).
Kenny Chesney’s Poets and Pirates Tour is only hitting 11 smaller arenas this year in addition to his Sold out stadium shows. Evansville Indiana was on the top of the list of places to come. Chesney’s tour bus will make a pit stop in Evansville on July 10 for what is sure to be one of the most anticipated show of the year. He is bringing with him solo artist Gary Allan, who was here last summer for the Grill for The Thrill [See our review].
