Evansville: Haters Of The Mosh Pit

I get a fair amount of news tips throughout the week for the site, but this is by far the greatest one I have ever received. Last night a guy named Mark emailed me with his thoughts on the Five Finger Death Punch concert at Woody’s last night.

I went to the Five Finger Death Punch concert in Louisville 2 weeks ago and it was one of the best Metal shows I had ever been to. They have a special, and somewhat renowned talent for inciting a very active mosh pit and participant crowd, and have a drummer from Boonville!

I just returned from 5 finger in Evansville at Woody’s and it was just like I feared; no mosh allowed, and a somewhat stifled show as a result! It was the only concert I’ve seen with no encore; probably because of the weak crowd, which wasn’t weak because of the fans, but because of the security/police presence.

How a mosh-famous band like 5 Finger could be reduced to a jumpity security fest, I don’t know, it wasn’t the bands fault, they tried.

Congrats WGBF, Woody’s, and Evansville for successfully embarrassing the drummer of one of the best up-and-coming rock bands in his home town. From the footage and the experience I’ve seen of the band, Evansville, Woody’s and WGBF had to be one of, if not the, weakest stop on their tour.

I swore after seeing Motley Crew at Roberts and being forced to stay in my seat like an old man, that I would never go to a concert in Evansville again, but honestly thought this would be different, because the nature of the band and the proximity of the crowd to the band, but no; Evansville, Woody’s, and WGBF sucks lame pussy no-moshing dicks.

Go get your radio station and concert bar there Evansville Alice…

Last concert I EVER go to in Evansville PERIOD!

And I am not alone. The three guys I rode home with, and everyone I was next to at the concert agrees! You suck Evansville! Stick to American Idol and country!

I think my favorite line in this entire thins is “Congrats WGBF, Woody’s, and Evansville for successfully embarrassing the drummer of one of the best up-and-coming rock bands in his home town.” I wasn’t aware that Boonville was a hotbed for new metal acts.

Music Spotlight: Rebel Fuel Tank

What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?

Rebel Fuel Tank - Dustin was on a trip to Nashville and he found a shot glass that said Rebel Fuel Tank on it. It seemed to fit and if I don’t say so myself I love our band name and think it fits well.

How long have you been together?
The current line up has been playing for about 8 months, but we have all played in different bands with each other in various forms for about 6 years.

Who is in the band and what instruments do they play?

  • Dustin White - vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica
  • Nathan Vaughn - rhythm guitar, backing vocals
  • Scott McClure - lead guitar, backing vocals
  • Matt Lynn “Moose” - drums, percussion
  • Larry Morris - bass, backing vocals

How did you get together?

Dustin and I started a band called Union Shovel in 2002. It was really the catalyst for what we do now. We took a break from that around 2004 and I started a band with Moose called Bumpin’ Uglies. We soon got Dustin as our singer and we played out for a short time. After that Dustin and Vaughn got together and started Rebel Fuel Tank. Shortly after that I rejoined and then Moose and we rounded out the lineup with Larry who had actually jammed with the earliest version of Rebel Fuel Tank. Crazy - you might need a graph to help you follow that one.

What type of music do you prefer playing?

I’m sure everyone in the band has a different answer to that but I think we all agree that we have the most fun playing our originals. We really believe strongly in our music and our creative process. When we’re playing our originals live and it connects with the band and the crowd there is no better feeling

Who do you most sound like?

Rebel Fuel Tank. It doesn’t matter if we are playing an original or a cover, we have a distinctive sound and we always sound like Rebel Fuel Tank. We blend elements of so many different styles (outlaw country, southern rock, classic rock, metal) and make it our own. But in the end we are a down and dirty rock and roll band through and through (as it should be).

Where is the best place to play in town?
We are thankful for every place we get to play and throw a party at. Much respect to everyone who has given RFT a chance. But if I had to pick one, for me personally it’s Lanhucks. They’ve always treated us well, Pam and Jim are great and it’s always a party.

What is your favorite song to play live?

Every single one of them. As soon as the first note of a song hits we just let loose and enjoy the ride. There’s nothing better than playing live music.

Whose your favorite local band (besides your own)?

I support all of the local bands - there are so many that do a fantastic job. Shut Up and Drive, Akacia, Metal Masquerade Ball, Stompbox 40, Troy Miller and Nocturnal (get back together) just to name a few.

What are your musical aspirations?

To leave it all on stage each and every time we play. We want the crowd at every show to have as much fun as we do. There is nothing better for us than playing music and we want to translate that to everyone who comes to see us. Every show we play is a party. We just want to keep writing new and better material and keep exposing it to as many people as possible by taking it to the road.

Where can we see you play around town?

Lanhucks, Hob Knob Bar, Hobo Jungle, Duck Inn, Late Nites in Jasper and a lot of others that are currently in the works. Give us a chance to play and we’ll be there to blow the roof off. Check us out our My Space at MySpaceMusic - keyword Rebel Fuel Tank.

Music Spotlight: As Forever Fades

What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?

We are As Forever Fades from Evansville/Newburgh Indiana. Our names was created to show that modern metal music can have more depth and progression intertwined.

How long have you been together?

The founding of AFF was over two years ago. A total line-up change of the members has occurred since then. Since the completion of musicians it has been about 6 months and over that course of time we have composed 6 songs and played a variety of shows across the midwest.

Band members consist of Trent Thompson (recently added member and guitarist age 17), Jon Munnier (bassist age 23), Seth Jackson (guitarist age 17), Jeremy Luman (vocalist age 19), Ryan Weisjahn (drummer age 16).

How did you get together?

Most of the history of this band relied upon luck. Our bassist contacted AFF proclaiming that he had a degree in audio recording from the Conservatory in Arizona and was quickly inducted into the band. Guitarist Trent Thompson has been friends with Jeremy Luman and Seth Jackson and was inducted in the band based on his musical talent and performance. Ryan Weisjahn joined AFF several months ago and has been performing in piano recitals, marching band, winter drumline, and jazz band for years.

What type of music do you prefer playing?

As Forever Fades is sticking to a progressive form of Metal that relies upon driving verses, punctuated breakdowns, and ranging vocal patterns. The musical genre we could most closely be classified into is a new breed known as Breakbeat.

What band do you most sound like?

As I Lay Dying, Lamb of God, and Job For A Cowboy are what we have been compared to in our writing style.

The size and quality of Boney Junes far surpasses any other local venue. They are definitely our favorite place to play at in town and always seem to have a good/active crowd.

What is your favorite song to play live? Why?

I think our song “Words Unclear,” which will be featured on our upcoming EP due in the summer, is our most exhilarating song. It’s got a terrific introduction, a powerful breakdown, a progressive verse, and a set of solos that really define it as one of our best pieces.

Who is your favorite local band?

Deliver Us From Evil definitely. They are our best friends and have much more talent than anyone in this area. We can’t wait until something good comes their way because they deserve it!

What are your musical aspirations?

We would love to become an Indie Label band. Fame would be great but fortune isn’t everything for us. The enjoyment we receive from playing shows for a crowd that respects and surprises us is an exceptional reward for us in AFF. Eventually, our bassist would love to retire from his daily job and start his recording studio but this can only happen when the band has enough drive to support our lives.

Where can we see you play around town?

Boney Junes, private parties, and bars here in the near future (even though only one of us is over the age of 21).

Music Spotlight: Philpot

What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?

The name of our band is Philpot. I owned a shirt in the past that said Philpot on it. It was a political shirt that my Grandmother had picked up at Democratic convention near Hammond. We were brainstorming for names for the band and really couldn’t come with anything that wasn’t already taken on napster ( when napster was free) so we decided to call ourselves Philpot after the shirt I was wearing at the time.

How long have you been together?

7 years.

Who is in the band and what instruments do they play?

My name is Kentz Ward and I’m the lead singer of the band. Caleb Smith and Josh Kennedy are our guitarists. Tyler Evans plays bass. A.J Boone handles the Keyboard/Piano. Arthur Ready is our percussionist.

How did you get together?

My brother was in a band that consisted of two of the members that now reside in this band. They eventually split up and I decided I wanted to start a band myself with Josh Kennedy, who was local ,and my cousin A.J Boone, who at the time lived in Robinson IL.

Josh and Caleb had been in the band with my brother and were also classmates of his at Dugger Union High School. Caleb had been playing in another band and we decided to add him because he was a good friend of ours and we wanted to fill up our rhythm and lead section. Once we had our strong guitar section we were in desperate need of a bass player. My brother and a few friends had told us about Tyler Evans from Linton, which isn’t far from Dugger (where we practice, rehearse and the band was formed). So he basically auditioned and we loved his sound and kept him. Arthur Ready, an excellent Jazz/Rock drummer from Sullivan, was later added, which finally completed our 6 member group we now call Philpot.

What type of music do you prefer playing?

Good Rock N Roll

What band(s) do you most sound like?

Hard to say. We listen to a lot of bands. I think we have our own sound.

Where is the best place to play in town and why?

There isn’t anywhere to play in our little town really. We really like the Verve in Terre Haute because we pack it in and we like the people who work there.

What is your favorite song to play live? Why?

“Jesus On A Chain”. It’s a new song. It’s very powerful. And no we are not a Christian band.

Whose your favorite local band (besides your own)?

Precore and Voxt Revolution are two bands. They are both great friends of ours.

What are your musical aspirations?

To be the biggest and best band we can be.

Where can we see you play around town?

April 18 at the USI Springfest. We go on around 8:55. Before the show on the 18th, we’ll be hanging out at Joe’s Records around 5PM. April 20th we’re at Woodys at 10PM.

Music Spotlight: Stompbox 40

What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?

We are Stompbox 40. Our drummer, Ashley Byrd came up with the idea; somehow he combined Matchbox 20 with an Anthrax Stomp 442 album. It was all his idea. Everyone laughed like crazy, but it stuck and everyone actually digs the name now! At first we were going to just call it Stompbox, but another band had that name already, so we tried to fit in with what everyone else what doing and put a number in our name! When people come up to us in Chicago and have actually heard the name Stompbox 40,

I think all of us are very proud of that fact.

How long have you been together?

Stompbox 40 has been together since 2001 and still going strong!

Who is in the band and what instruments do they play?

Dave Cobb - Vocals and Guitar/Acoustic Guitar
Eric Elder - Lead Guitar
Brett Elder - Bass Guitar and Vocals
Stacey Hurst - Vocals
Fletcher Byrd - Drums and Vocals

How did you get together?

Well, Eric and I had another band called Severed Ties that was playing stuff like Danzig, Metallica, Megadeth, Prong, and Pantera. We actually had some decent luck at first when we got into the Evansville scene about 1998. Our band got a real nice little following here in Evansville, but when we hit bigger venues such as the old Harpole’s and the old Sky’s, we figured out pretty quickly that songs like Holy Wars…the Punishment Due wasn’t going over nearly as well with the college crowd as in the smaller bars. The crowds didn’t seem near as receptive, so we decided to make a change and start playing more crowd pleasing music that you can dance and groove to. We still play some of the heavier stuff now occasionally, which is a lot more musically intense than the dance material, but we completely overhauled our old band’s set list. So, we formed Stompbox 40 with our current drummer (3 of the same members) and with a Brian Sollman.

We started playing more current music such as Limp Bizkit, Weezer, and Default. Had Brian in the band for about 2 years and ran a video show that projects the band/crowd/video clips on the screen. Dave Cobb (our current vocalist), was running all of our video and actually got up to sing a few songs with us and seemed like he had a pretty good voice. Well, things didn’t work out with Brian (although we are still very good friends with him) and Dave took over. Along the way, we added the extremely talented Stacey Hurst, to add even a bigger variety to our set list. The band is just now one big family!

What type of music do you prefer playing?

Well, that is going to depend on who you ask in the band. I think some of our all around favorites that we do are Nine Inch Nails, Rob Zombie, Guns N’ Roses, Joan Jett, and Metallica.

What band do you most sound like?

Hard to say since we are pretty much a cover band, but we are very guitar driven band. I think most people that have seen us play can pretty much see that we aren’t up there playing songs in the wrong key or the wrong way or something, lol. The leads in the songs are the same leads that is on the CD’s from the bands we are covering for the most part.

Where is the best place to play in town and why?

We love playing everywhere, but we are probably most comfortable in Fast Eddy’s. We have really built a huge following of people that comes out to party with us at Fast Eddy’s.

What is your favorite song to play live? Why?

Mine is Nine Inch Nails’ Closer. The whole entire song is just awesome. The lyrics, the groove, and the build up at the end of the song. We usually have a lot of fun playing that song.

Whose your favorite local band?

Interesting question! Probably Mayor Frank or BSR, because those bands are doing different types of music than us, plus they are pretty talented musicians on top of it. We have been friends with those guys for years.

What are your musical aspirations?

Our band just wants to keep doing this as long as we can. We are pretty much like one big family. We have our moments where someone gets burnt, but for the most part, we all love playing music with each other. Everyone in the band is just really, really good friends, so that just makes it better. We just want to keep playing and entertaining people for as long as we can keep doing this.

Where can we see you play around town?

Well, you can see us play at Fast Eddy’s, the Timeout in the Executive Inn, an occasional O’Brian’s show, and we are even at Club Royale. We play out of Evansville quite a bit trying to avoid the burn out factor, but you can always probably catch us in town at least once a month; if not twice.

Concert Review: Carrie Underwood & Josh Turner

Being a fan of music in general, I try to attend every show that comes to town. Walking into Robert Stadium Wednesday night you would have thought Britney Spears was in town. The crowd was filled with screaming teenage girls and middle-aged mothers eager to see an American Idol in Evansville.

I was anticipating Josh Turners performance. He has such a Johnny Cash sound and style it is really refreshing compared to some of the newer country artist. The lights went out right at 7:30. Josh turner came out strumming his all black acoustic guitar to the melodies of his hit “Firecracker.” Josh played a few more songs then had the crowd in awe when he began to play his latest single “Another Try” featuring Trisha Yearwood. He had the crowd on there feet and interacting the entire set. The only disappointment was he only played for about 30 minutes. I look forward to hearing unreleased music at concerts not a set of radio songs.

Most of our readers may know Carrie from the ever popular American Idol. She won the title of American Idol in May of 2004. Another fun fact about Carrie is that she is certified 7 times platinum on her debut album, “Some Hearts.” It is the fastest selling debut country album in history.

If she could only put on a live show like she can sell records.

This is my second time seeing her. Her concert debut was here in 2006 with Kenny Chesney. This time around she is all by herself on that big stage. I was interested to see how being so new to the country music world she would keep 8,000 plus people entertained. Don’t get me wrong she has had her share of hits, but that doesn’t constitute being able to headline a concert. The crowd was not interacting with her at all.

The only entertaining thing about her performance was the intelligent lighting show. We ended up leaving the concert about 5 songs into her set I could not stand sitting in my chair watching her sing all ballads and parade around in different outfits every song.

I think this show would have been better if Josh Turner was headlining. Carrie needs to call up Kenny and get some tips from the 3 time entertainer of the year before she goes back on the road.

Editors note: Here’s video from the show uploaded by a YouTube user. The Courier has also published their review of the show which is the complete opposite of our review.

Music Spotlight: Paul Osburn

What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?

Paul Osburn. This is simply just my name. You can thank my parents for it.

How long have you been playing?

I have played guitar for about 4 or 5 years. I have been working on this solo project for a little under a year

What’s your history?

I started playing guitar when my dad was out of town on a business trip over the summer of my 7th grade year. I wanted to learn how to play guitar, so i got out my dads guitar and a few chord books/charts. This is how i learned my basic chords. Before too long i was putting these chords together and writing my first song.

What type of music do you prefer playing?

Acoustic, but I also enjoy all kinds of music.

What band(s) do you most sound like?

Backseat Goodbye, Ladybug Landslide, Secondhand Serenade.

Where is the best place to play in town and why?

The best place to play in town is Boney Junes. This is a great venue! It was amazing sound and a good crowd. It is also a nice, clean facility.

What is your favorite song to play live? Why?

My favorite song to play live is “The Wreck”. This song is just fun because many people sing along when i play it. Also this song has a lot of meaning behind it. It is based on a guy and girl relationship, where the guy wants to tell this girl how he feels about her. The guy struggles to tell her and then finally it is too late, the opportunity has past.

What are your musical aspirations?

I would like to do this as my living. I understand how the music business works so I will always have a back up if this fails.

Where can we see you play around town?

You can see me play at Boney Junes, Wired Coffee House, Internet Cafe (Computer Solutions), Starbucks, and others soon to come.

Music Spotlight: Jeremiah Daniels

It’s Evansville is starting a new recurring feature that will spotlight local and regional musicians that are playing shows around Evansville. If you are a local musician, contact It’s Evansville editor Justin Williams to schedule your profile.

What’s the name of your group and what’s the origin of it?

The name is Jeremiah Daniels because it’s a simple solo project. I have debated on having an actual
name for the project, but every time I think of giving it a name I remember why I made this project, to give an intimate portrayal of the perspectives I have on life and myself so I ended up keeping it named to represent me.

How long have you been a musician?

I have actually been an all around musician most of my life, but for this “band” specifically
it all started off and on 4 years ago. It took action around the middle of ‘07. Though I have been in and out of bands since I was 12, I knew this solo project would exist someday to express my songwriting aspects. I just didn’t know what style or time in my life it would live.

What’s going on right now with the project?

It’s just me in the writing process. The concept is very stripped down. I want my music to be as raw, naked, and intimate as my lyrics. The instruments range from Acoustic guitar, slow soulful lead electric, piano and electric (stage) piano, programming, and in the, hopefully, not so near future viola and cello.

Though most of this will apply to the recordings. My live shows will mainly consist of Acoustic and programming for now. Occasionally I will bring in some friends for a whole band couple of shows.

What type of music do you prefer playing?

Though labels and genres still contain a lot of different styles of bands, I am comfortable to say that my music is ambient, intimate, experimental, indie folk. I am constantly looking for new unique ways to express what is in my head, hence the many genres.

Who do you most sound like?

Apparently Damien Rice made a couple of his songs my own and they get some attention. The other main person I sound like, but a different vocal range, is William Fitzsimmons. He’s not on a label. I met him via Internet a while back and now he is taking off having songs on Grey’s Anatomy and now has tours through out big cities. He used to have Ingrid Michelsons sing with him and still does from time to time.

Where is the best place to play in town and why?

Anywere that’ll have me, but if I had to choose it would definitely be 1123 club. I have played there before in different style bands which is one of the reasons I love the place. You can bring pretty much anytime of show there. They also have paid more than their dues to get respect of all the musicians in town and have came along with still holding the venue’s integrity.

What is interesting about 1123 is though it’s known for more underground rock and hardcore the place fits well for other styles of music with accommodating for the feel of the crowd by having chairs for more relaxed show. Overall, with a great owner and a good reputation it gets my vote.

What is your favorite song to play live? Why?

Well it’s had to say. I know I am suppose to say “Meet Me In The Air” or “We’ll Be Alright” because it’s the crowds favorite and a couple of fans sing along, but I love my more intimate almost whispery songs because that is honestly when it feels like it’s just me a guitar, mic, and my soul.

When the songs come off right and at the right time the crowd stops and looks and feels like they are witnessing something deeper going on on stage.

Whose your favorite local musician?

Hands down, right now it has to be The Apprentice and Deafmegan. The Apprentice for Eric’s raw intimate performance and description of his self, and DeafMegan for their unique style on stage as well as their unbelievable confection with the crowd.

What are your musical aspirations?

As long as my music touches one person in the crowd and helps them in anyway then my aspirations are succeeded. My personal aspirations is to never stop growing.

Where can we see you play around town?

Anywhere there is a mic and PA. More specifically: 1123, Boney Junes, The Wired, Lanhucks, Starbucks, Briar and Bean, Teen Outback (Huntingburg), and many others.

Music Spotlight: DeafMegan

It’s Evansville is starting a new recurring feature that will spotlight local and regional musicians that are playing shows around Evansville. If you are a local musician, contact It’s Evansville editor Justin Williams to schedule your profile.

What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?

Our bands name is DeafMegan and the origin of the name comes from a television show on Showtime called Weeds. It’s a characters name.

How long have you been together?

We’ve only been together about 4 months now collectively.

Who is in the band and what instruments do they play?

Justin Waddington - Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Sam Rice - Bass Guitar
Seth Grundhoefer - Lead Guitar
Riley Fugate - Trumpet, Vocals
Cory Seib - Keyboards, Vocals
Jordan Willis - Drums

How did you get together?

I started writing songs when I moved down to Evansville from Indy for college. I met Cory in choir and we started playing small acoustic shows together. At our first show, we met our bassist Sam.

Sam played small acoustic shows too and we played for each other over the next year or so, opening for each other and things of that nature. Sam grew up with Seth and they played in their high school’s choir band together. I knew he could play so we started jamming together.

I met Riley Fugate in choir the same year I met Cory, but I didn’t utilize his trumpet abilities until I started recording a solo CD. Jordan Willis lived above me at school and I played guitar for him once for a talent show at USI and I knew he could play drums. When I started recording my CD, I realized that we could all just combine and form and band, and thats what happened.

What type of music do you prefer playing?

We all prefer to play something different when we are playing separately, but together we like to play music that no one has ever heard before. Music thats easy to listen to, but also fun. Music that incorporates all the instruments we have. Music that conveys emotion.

What band(s) do you most sound like?

I haven’t really come across anyone that sounds like us.

Where is the best place to play in town?

Well, the only place we’ve played thus far as a band is Boney Junes, and its a pretty rad place. It’s big enough for all six of us on stage and they have an amazing sound system.

What is your favorite song to play live?

We like all the songs we play, we don’t really have a favorite, but we all converse and decide as a group which songs to play.

Whose your favorite local band?

The only band we can really think of is Valley Tide. When I played solo, we played with them and they were good. They aren’t from here though, but pretty close.

What are your musical aspirations?

To make music for a living, and to make a difference.

Where can we see you play around town?

Boney Junes on February 29th and hopefully we can find some other places to play.
