Mitch Albom, the author of “Tuesdays with Morrie_ and The Five People You Meet in Heaven is coming to the University of Southern Indiana Oct. 21 to deliver USI’s Fall Lecture. Albom has a new book out called Have a Little Faith, which chronicles his his eight year relationship with a rabbi who asked Albom to deliver his eulogy.
I read Tuesdays With Morrie, but I remember Albom more for his questionable journalistic ethics in writing a column about a Michigan game two days before it happened. I guess that’s what reading Deadspin does to you.
If you’re looking for something interesting and unique to do this Saturday and don’t have a date, the EVPL is hosting an anime convention at Central Library. E’Ville Con, as they are calling it, will feature a cosplay contest, anime screenings, special guest speakers, artist alley, and video game tournaments.

The roads downtown are covered in a layer of ice, no one is at work, Subway is closed and I’m listening to large pieces of ice fall off my building. Was Snowpocalypse ‘09 good for you too?
The Vanderburgh County Solid Waste Management District is holding their annual holiday recycling day on January 3. The event begins at 8:00 and runs until 12:00 in the Civic Center parking lot.
In addition to tree recycling, residents will be able to recycle the following household items:
I love a good parade as much as the next guy and we have two happening this Sunday. First up is the parade to welcome back the 163rd after a scenic tour of Iraq. Starting around early afternoon when the troops arrive at Tri-State Aero, you can line up along 41 to the Lloyd to Vann Road to welcome the troops home.
After your done waving your flags, head downtown to the Main St Walkway for the 20th annual Downtown Holiday Parade at 3PM. The parade route follows the walkway as well as Locust and Second St. Kids can meet Santa at 1PM Sunday at the park at Fourth and Main streets.
I’m usually not one to begin the holiday celebration before Thanksgiving has passed, but since I’m down here and the parade is going right by my place, I’ll see if I can grab some video and photos for the site.
I think we can all agree that Bobby Knight is one of the greatest motivational speakers coaches of our time (see above video). Coach Knight will be in town Sunday evening at The Centre (7PM) to benefit the Greater St James Community Recreation Education Center. The Recreation Center was founded by former IU player, and local native, Calbert Chaney.
Along with Bobby Knight’s speech, there will also be a silent auction. Tickets are $14 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.
Brian Regan is one of the funniest comedians around these days. He’ll be in Evansville on Saturday to play a show at the Victory Theatre at 8PM. Regan is a frequent guest on Bob & Tom (boo) as well as Opie & Anthony (yay). He is one of the few clean comics that I find legitimately funny.
A few weeks ago when I wrote about what I thought the Freedom Festival should become, a few commenters suggested I wanted it to turn into the Jazz, Wine & Arts Festival that is taking place this Saturday. The one-day celebration will showcase non-stop entertainment and art in the heart of Evansville’s downtown district.
Local music will take place on three different stages and will feature Cynthia MacDonald & Bob Green, Matt Clark and Reunion Trio. The Indiana University Jazz Ensemble are slated to headline the event. Advance tickets are $15 for individuals, $25 for couples until Saturday, when the price goes up $5.
Just a quick note that we’re a week away from the It’s Evansville Fantasy Football draft. We have room for 3 more teams, so if you’re interested in playing, it would probably be in your best interest to get signed up.
