Not Enough Votes? File a Lawsuit to Keep That Seat!

7

Jeff Korb, the bowtie wearing, abortion bill passing, former county commissioner may not be gone just yet. Despite the fact that voters soundly said they did not want him back in his seat after the November 4 election, he has now filed a lawsuit claiming that Stephen Melcher’s election is not valid.

Korb, through his attorney, claims that Melcher’s candidacy violated the Hatch Act, which prohibits political activities by federal workers. Since Melcher is employed by the Community Action Program of Evansville who receives federal funding, he may be ineligble to serve.

Should Korb’s petition go through, he will get to maintain his seat until a special election can be held to determine a new seat holder.

Sounds like a sore loser to me. Go away, sir.

Post Election Day Wrapup

Well that was fun, but can we never talk about politics again? I’m so burnt out.

  • Gas prices are below $2 in Evansville.
  • Locally, the election day went off without incident for the most part.
  • Indiana is a blue state. Vanderburgh County went blue. Warrick stayed red.
  • How did Obama win? New voters.
  • Reaction around the world shows approval for the Obama win.
  • Here’s a good story on how and why Mitch Daniels was reelected.
  • Pack up the bow ties. Steve Melcher defeated Jeff Korb for his Evansville County Commissioners seat. Hope trying to sneak that anti-abortion ordinance under the rug was worth it.
  • The EVSC referendum passed, so look for a new high school and middle school in the future.

After two years of campaigning, the time is now. Today is the day that we finally elect the next president of the United States. Who will it be? The scrappy, young Senator from Chicago or the grizzled war hero from Arizona. Polls put Obama up by around 8%, but don’t discount people’s ability to
accidently fall on that white button when they get in the voting booth.

At this point I don’t really care who wins. Both candidates are flawed, but neither is flawed enough that it’s going to doom us. I just hope it actually ends today (cough2000cough).

I’ll be checking in via the comments on the thread all day and would love for you to share your photos and commentaries from the polling places you are visiting.

Happy Election Day!

10:00AM: How is the Starbucks line? They have amended their free coffee promotion to giving anyone a free cup after the legality of the promo was questioned. Silly.

10:25AM: In preparation for this evening’s festivities, I’ve added MSNBC’s tracking widget.

11:05PM: Warrick County was too cheap to buy “I Voted” stickers. Sigh.

5:44PM: Early results from Kentucky and Indiana are coming in. Obama has a slight Indiana lead, but is getting blown out in Kentucky.

6:00PM: Obama gets Vermont. McCain gets Kentucky.

7:13PM: My Man Mitch has won a second term as Indiana governor.

7:36PM: 103-43 Obama with 14 states in.

8:00PM: Ellsworth wins according to the AP. No story yet.

8:25PM: MSNBC projects Ohio to Obama. He’s closing in on 200.

8:36PM: Despite early totals ABC has put Indiana in the blue column

10:00PM: Game Over

1:10PM: Indiana is a blue state

If you happen to hit this in the next hour or so, you can grab the direct stream of Biden’s gig downtown at the following URL:

Thanks to WEHT for making a completely not Mac friendly Web UI. If you have Flip4Mac installed, you can open that URL in Quicktime and get it working though.

George Carlin on Voting

0

If you’re sitting at home or in an office that can take a little bit of NSFW language, here’s a great George Carlin bit on why he doesn’t vote. This is one of my favorite Carlin bits and find it to be absolutely brilliant.

Even though I will still be voting Tuesday, after 2 years of bitching and moaning about the candidates, I’d rather just unplug for the next 5 days until it’s past us all.

That Other Joe Is Coming Saturday

1

Did you really think we’d make it to Tuesday without one more visit from a candidate? Joe Biden will be at the corner of 6th and Main on Saturday starting at 10AM to give an Early Vote for Change Rally.

People are allowed to start coming in around 8 and tickets are not required, but you can RSVP if you really want to. It’s just a few blocks from me, but I don’t know if I can stomach anymore of the election stuff.

Update: I’d rather have Sarah Palin, but Republicans are giving us Mitt Romney Sunday.

The Evansville Public Libraries are holding early voting prior to Tuesday’s elections. They published a few photos of today’s hot voting action.

Early Voting in Evansville

11

Politico’s Ben Smith received an email story about early voting in Evansville. Here’s the transcript:

I squeaked in just before the 7pm deadline to find two very frustrated poll workers and a line of a couple dozen people, due to problems with the computerized voting system not accepting people’s driver’s licenses. It was taking about 7-10 minutes per person just to get the computer to accept them as valid and to print out their ballot, causing very long delays.

For me the most moving moment came when the family in front of me, comprising probably 4 generations of voters (including an 18 year old girl voting for her first time and a 90-something hunched-over grandmother), got their turn to vote. When the old woman left the voting booth she made it about halfway to the door before collapsing in a nearby chair, where she began weeping uncontrollably. When we rushed over to help we realized that she wasn’t in trouble at all but she had not truly believed, until she left the booth, that she would ever live long enough to cast a vote for an African-American for president. Anyone who doesn’t think that African-American turnout will absolutely SHATTER every existing record is in for a very rude surprise.

There were about 20 people in front of me but remarkably not a single person left the room without voting over the 2 hours it took to get through the line.

Thanks to Emily for the tip

I never thought Saturday Night Live would become a relevant part of American pop culture again, but the 2008 election have made it possible. Here’s your latest dose of everyone’s favorite Alaskan Hockey Mom. And if you want some bonus points, I recommend Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals
