About That Prop 8 Protest…

Comments | Add A Comment

If you were driving around MLK in front of the Civic Center yesterday around noon, you probably saw a group of people with rainbow colored signs and flags protesting the passing of Proposition 8) in California.

The protest was part of a nationwide protest that took place in all 50 states. While I’m glad the protesters are standing up for what they believe in, I wonder who thought it was a grand idea to protest something downtown on a Saturday. Other than me and the few other downtown dwellers, no one saw this. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to move to a more populated area on the East or North side of town?

holding the rally on the east side would have made it more visible to the public, but i believe holding the rally at the civic center was more of a symbolic gesture.

would there be a public place where people could rally/protest on the east side with high visibility?

Civic Center would have made sense during the week when people are actually around. What’s the point of a rally if no one knows you are even doing it?

I agree, I totally support protesting Prop 8, I think its horrendous they took away someone’s right to marry (and think its horrendous they didn’t even have that right in the first place)…..but it would’ve been better if they could’ve chosen a time or a place when more people would be around….like Civic Center during the week or if on the weekend—hell, just stand infront of the mall or Target, that’s where everyone is on the weekend. May not be like the Civic Center or any similar thing, but still, that’s where the population of Evansville flocks to on the weekends.

i was there covering it for the local media.. it was nice to see the support in numbers. i believe 100 or so people is a good turnout, considering the quick planning on a national scale, and the weather.. cold, windy w/ rain.

That’s awesome! I missed the protest and I had no idea that many people showed up. Compares very favorable to protests in much larger cities (100 compared to like 250 in Indy). I’m proud.

As for those saying it should’ve been on a weekday… this was a nationwide act of solidarity; all over the U.S., thousands of people gathered to protest at the exact same time, mostly outside government offices, city halls, and such. The Centre may have not been the best choice of locale, but it wasn’t a bad one either. There’s still plenty of traffic on MLK on Saturdays.

yeah I didn’t realize it was a nation wide planning til after I said the time thing…..tho I still think somewhere on the east side owuld’ve been a better choice for a weekend
