Fall Festival Food Adventure 2008: Part Deux

We made it back to the Fall Festival for lunch again today. I have to apologize for not trying too many outlandish things. Though, in my defense, I couldn’t find the deep fried dandelions anywhere!
I tried the Deep Fried Stuffed Olives that were stuffed with salsa and cheese. They were okay, a bit too cheesy—and that’s just something I never say, I love cheese. Examining my bite, it looked like olives had been diced and mixed in a Velveeta cheese and salsa mixture, breaded, and fried. It was pretty strong. I was picturing, and think it would have tasted much better if it was a whole black olive that was actually stuffed, breaded, and fried.
Deep Fried Olives: Booth 75, Vanderburgh Humane Society, $2.00
I also tried the Dirty Diaper based on a hungry reader’s suggestion. As it turns out, a Fall Festival “Dirty Diaper” could either be (a) a discarded dirty diaper, or (b) a pumpkin turnover. The pumpkin turn over was pretty good! It tasted a little like pumpkin pie, but slightly different due to the flakey turnover crust. I liked it though.
Dirty Diaper: Booth 55, Salem UMC, $2.00-3.00 (I forget)
Another thing I tried that was great was the Hot Tamale (they also have a chili cheese hot tamale which sounds intriguing). It may not have been traditionally prepared, but I thought it was really good. Soft cornmeal outside that somehow was almost creamy, with meat in the middle. Hot as hell!
Hot Tamale: Booth 47, Evansville Racing Pigeon Club, $1.50
Other things we tried (sometimes again) were a Pronto Pup, Chicken & Dumplings, Shrimp Creole (very good), Deep Fried Hot Dog, and chocolate covered banana—of course. And there is nothing but cold apple cider that’s worth washing it down with!

Thanks for the review! I’m heading down there for lunch today and was planning on trying the fried olives, but hearing that it’s not a whole olive, as I hoped, I may use my money elsewhere :)

yep—agreed, I thought they were whole olives, and had a filling in the pit….nope….and they weren’t very good to make up for it, I was pretty disapointed

I did try the fried olives. My mom and I got the sampler platter that VHS was offering. Not bad for what it was, but I wanted more olive!

you know what, I was in the grocery today and happened to look to my left and what do I see packed in boxed in a frozen bin? None other than dozens upon dozens of frozen hot tamale. I looked at the package, and they were the ones served at the Fall Fest. I’d been under the impression that they made the tamales themselves, but nope, these were the exact ones they served in every way. Sort of a disappointment there.

Well, I found a HUGE supply of them at Schnucks—made me wonder if they didn’t order them in excess and come get them from Schnucks as needed and that those were the extras that Schnucks had stored. Just because there were so many of them. Oh well, at least they were good!
