Fall Festival Food Adventure 2008

The Fall Festival is officially back, and I am too to bring you the Fall Festival Food Adventure! I have to admit, today my sister and I stuck to pretty basic stuff for the most part, but at the same time, I also found some pretty good stuff. Let’s have at it.
Last year I tried the Gumbo, this year it was the Crawfish Etoufee. I have to admit, I am a huge fan of it and was excited to see it. My eftoufee was packed with crawfish. That’s something you should expect, but unfortunately can sometimes be rare, so it was a pleasant surprise. It was served over rice in a nice sized cup, great portion for the price I think. Could’ve used a little more spice.
Crawfish Etoufee: Booth 23, German Township Booster, $4.00
Now, I know I tried this last year, but I couldn’t help but try it again. Of course, it was all in the name of journalism: Chicken & Dumplings. There are so many places that serve this, but I think the best booth is the booth that ONLY serves them. In my opinion, a long line should be proof something is good. Just like I remembered, they were delicious, my sister and I split a medium, which is now a dollar more than last year.
Chicken & Dumplings (my pick): Booth 18, Emanuel Lutheran Church, Small $3.00, Medium $6.00, Large $8.00.
I found a booth serving chocolate dipped bananas—something I’ve been craving after seeing it on tv. It was perfect—it was frozen, but the banana wasn’t rock hard, meaning it was still easily eaten. It really was a great treat and highly recommended.
Chocolate Covered Bananas: Booth 118, Evansville Jr. Football League, $2.50 (I think)
My sister and I also tried Chocolate Covered Bacon. I’ve heard great things about it on tv, but the way they did it just wasn’t good. The bacon was thick and chewy, almost like a jerky even. I would’ve preferred crispy, thinner bacon. However, the chocolate was thickly coated. It was too expensive for the amount and quality.
Chocolate Covered Bacon: I can’t find it on the map, but believe it was Booth 19 or 36 (I know it was on a corner), $6 for 4 pieces!?
Other staples eaten were a corn dog, walking taco, dirt & worms, and cider.
Please send in suggestions for next time we go—probably Wednesday! What do you want us to try?

I’ve got two items for you to try. I haven’t had either of them and I’m mostly just curious about what they are.
Deep Fried Dandelions, Booth 99 - They didn’t really fry a weed and expect people to eat it, did they?
Fried Coke, Booth 67 - How is that possible?

oh man, I did the fried coke last year—its nasty. Its like they soak donut balls in coke and then fry it. But its just nasty.

It is your duty to eat a brain sandwich and let me record it for the site.

The booth for the pig lickers was 36. The price was $3.00 for 4 pieces last night. It was worth sampling with friends but I doubt if anyone would actually eat the four pieces. It was worth trying but I doubt that I’ll get any next year. My recommendation is the deep-fried stuffed olives from the Humane Society. They were delicious. And as always, make sure to eat the Kraut Balls from Germania Maennerchor (with the spicy mustard as a dipping sauce). Also, the pumpkin fudge and ice cream from the pumpkin patch were an especially rare treat.

My 11-year old wants to try the pig-lickers. My wife loves the white chili from the first booth on the south side of the street at St Joe and Franklin. I was pretty tame today - got the best catfish sandwich from the Old North United Methodist Church Booth, and a not-so-good pronto pup from some other booth. My wife also had the catfish sandwich, a ski slushie (she loved it), French Waffles from one of North High School’s booths, and the aforementioned white chili.

I really like the kraut balls at Gerst Haus, so I definitely have to try the ones Kyle speaks of. The spicy mustard dipping sauce sounds yummy.

FYI - pig lickers = chocolate covered bacon. Just to clarify, the spicy mustard dipping sauce isn’t so much a dipping sauce as a bottle of spicy mustard kept outside the booth window. It is a delicious complement to the kraut balls.

Kraut Balls = Amazing
I had the Prime rib sandwich and fried green beans. I’m not sure which booth they were at but they were amazing.
I saw bugaroo somewhere, I’m stoked.

if you aren’t a fan of sourkraut will you like the kraut balls?
Also—pig lickers…thaaaaaat explains why I couldn’t find “chocolate covered bacon” on the food map! Their booth had big signs saying “chocolate covered bacon” but I didn’t see the “pig lickers” one….must be why I didn’t put 2 and 2 together!
