Following up on the Jazz, Wine & Art Festival is news that a new wine and dessert establishment will be opening in late October. Called Taste: A Wine And Dessert Bar it will be in the lower level of the Baynham’s Shoe Co. building at 323 Main St.

Taste will feature fifty-six different kinds of wines as well as cheesecakes and pies. You can get a sneak peak of the inside of the place during the Jazz, Wine & Art Festival this weekend.

This sounds somewhat similar to my favorite place at Purdue, Capp & Ginos. They had an awesome little wine & dessert bar upstairs. I loved that cheese plate.

Yes, it’s Clockwork Orange quote day. I’m obsessed with Mr. Alexander

I’m going to walk in and yell:
“Welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, well. To what do I owe the extreme pleasure of this surprising visit? “

    gmwong: I don’t get it?

I would purchase it. Its got to be fairly inexpensive and you’ll need to watch it twice!

Has anyone tried this place? Is it open?

  7. Im not sure if its open or not. There’s a tiny sign out in front of it. It’s in the same place as the Rug Merchant it looks like. Maybe on the lower level? I need to investigate more, but it’s too damn cold to stop. :)

We tried it and loved it. I am determined to return often…the atmosphere is perfect for enjoying conversation and great wines. Our party ordered two different bottles of wine and we shared a couple of desserts that paired nicely with the chosen wines. It’s a very classy and elegant place to go…packed house last night after about 9pm…much slower prior to that time. The musicians (keyboard/vocals/bass guitar) that started at around 9 were great–perfect volume that allowed us to enjoy the music while continuing our conversation. I finished with a cup of coffee, which was brought out in a French press…nice touch. Gentlemen, surprise your ladies by taking her here. Trust me. =)

Only suggestions: better signage and a website with a calendar of events would be helpful.

I had hopes this wouldn’t suck, but that wasn’t the case. The desert we ordered was mediocre at best, and the cheese tray was laughable. For a place that is trying to be swanky, serving an assortment that included a cheese ball and inexpensive grocery store cheeses (the fanciest was a bottom of the barrel manchego) served with, I kid you not, Townhouse crackers, is a sure sign of a restaurant that has no real conception of what it is trying to emulate. On top of the incredibly weak food, the servers and chef were rude when we asked questions, or incompetent (couldn’t pronounce cabernet). The pours for the wine flights were very small as well (and when I asked, the “carbenay” was from “savignon”). If you HAVE to go, order only wine and nothing else. 1 out of 4 stars.

I went this past Friday with some friends and had so much fun my husband and I went back again on Sat after coming from the Philharmonic! I am shocked to hear the last persons comment; my experience was just the opposite! When I went on Friday I had the chocolate pate which was sensational! It was creamy, airy and simply delicious. I could stop eating it. The next night I had the same thing (I think I’m addicted :)). On Sat I did have a Pinot Noir flight; it consisted of 3 2oz glasses of wine, which is pretty normal size for a flight. I went to a wine bar in St. Louis in theirs were 1.5 oz. The experience is not getting drunk; it’s about sampling the differences from each glass. I didn’t get the fruit and cheese tray, but my friends did. I know she had Brie and Drunken Goat cheese because those are two of my favorite cheeses so I kept eating hers…. The server did admit she was fairly new, but she was knowledgeable and very friendly.
My advice, if you are looking for stuffy, boring and predictable place this is not for probably not for you. If you want new, fresh and off the beaten track you’ll really appreciate and love it!

Since my previous comment I have been back to “Taste” with other friends and we enjoyed it as much as the first time. Just don’t expect to get in and get out…and like Olivia said, if you are looking for normal/predictable this is not the place for you.
