Holy Ragweed

Starting this weekend I noticed that my fall allergies started cropping up. I used to be a major allergy sufferer, but in recent years it’s been fairly light unless the ragweed or mold was up. Well, that’s the case.
[Dr. Anne] McLaughlin’s latest tallies show ragweed at 149 grains per cubic meter of air.
That’s high, she says. It’s in the orange range, the next-to-worst designation on the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology’s five-band, color-coded scale.
Her latest mold spore count, a reading of 25,700 spores per cubic meter, is also in the orange range.
Dr. McLaughlin suggests limiting the time spent outside as a way to cut back on the allergens. I guess hanging out at the Sterling Brewery followed by a Labor Day picnic yesterday wasn’t the best idea. Excuse me while I go sneeze 20 mores times. Ugh.

I’ve noticed my allergies being more active lately—bah!
My sister was a mess this weekend and today. She’s 16, and absolutely refuses to admit she has allergies.
“This happens to you each season, trust me its allergies”
“no, its not allergies, I’ve never had allergies in my life! Its a cold”
“ummm, you keep thinking that, but everyone else has allergies too, its really high right now, and that’s whenever you get your ‘cold’ is when allergy season starts to peak”
“I do NOT have allergies! I NEVER HAVE!”

My wife and I went camping with the in-laws near Madison, IN over the long weekend and let me tell ya, I’m paying for it. I was OK Saturday, but by Sunday I could hardly breathe through my nose and my eyes were like two waterfalls. It only got worse yesterday, and today my throat is killing me. I’ve been prone to allergies all my life and I must say that the last year or so has been rough. I had a hard time with them last fall and they were terrible back in the spring too. There for a while (up until last fall) they weren’t all that bad, but they have gotten progressively worse since last year. I’d be interested to know if anyone out there has any insight as to why there has been such a high increase in pollen and ragweed.

I had allergy shots when I was 7 or 8 (33 years ago) and I finally went back to see the allergist a couple of months ago. He has me doing the shots again, 3 shots once a week for 6 months.(w/two dollar co-pay each time.) The Doc also has me taking Zyrtec D. The zyrtec actually helps, I never had any relief from the other OTC allergy products. Give it a try.
Same as everyone else, spring is horrible and the fall sneezes don’t kick in until mid-September. I can’t wait for the first killing frost.
