Booze on Sunday? Yes Please!

While I don’t drink, I have always thought the practice of prohibiting the sale of alcohol on Sundays was ridiculous. I have failed to see the logic behind the law and can only assume it’s yet another nod to the fanatically religious midwest.
That said, there may be hope for those that want to pick up a case of beer on Sunday. The new group, Hoosiers for Beverage Choices has been established by members of Indiana’s Retail Council to repeal the law.
In addition to repealing the sober Sunday laws, the group is also hoping to get legislation passed to allow for the sale of cold beer at drug, grocery and convenience stores. No need to keep a cooler in your trunk anymore, people!
Don’t look for a quick fix to the issue. Since it is a budget year there isn’t likely to be any discussion of alchol-related legislation. Here’s hoping you can visit your favorite liquor store in 2010 on Sunday.

you’ve never noticed all the car lots are closed on sunday? their being closed isn’t by choice—part of what’s commonly called “blue laws,” those edicts designed to enforce moral standards, help ensure people observe the Sabbath, yadda yadda yadda.

Retailers used to support blue laws because they basically sold the same amounts with only paying employees for 6 days, electric for 6 days, etc.
The Midwest is fanatically religious? I wonder what you think of the south.

i think most retailers who are forced to be closed on sunday would want to be open—there’s always that one person who will/might buy something. same reasoning, i imagine, why restaurants are open on holidays (i.e., Thanksgiving).

that the south is:
a) dogmatically rigid — southern baptist (as my wife was raised and eventually rebelled against): no dancing, no drinking, etc.
b) hare-brained insane — snake handling “churches”
c) a great place to begin televangelism — lots of money, it’s been proven, in duping the masses
d) not a haven for catholics — which is a good thing

Don’t forget you can’t buy alcohol on election day until after the polls have closed. Don’t vote drunk, or for obama.
