Worst Post-SNL Movie Resume?

Let’s face it. Outside of drug busts and people getting run over it’s been pretty slow around town lately. Taking queue from one of my favorite sports blogs, The Big Lead, let’s talk movies.
From TBL:
Enjoyed Adam Sandler’s career on SNL. Watch the re-runs all the time. Thought Billy Madison was humorous, and we won’t immediately click away from Wedding Singer if it’s on TBS. But starting with Waterboy in 1998, has a funny guy had a more unwatchable career than Adam Sandler? The guy’s making incredible loot, but can you honestly say you’ve walked away from a Sandler flick in the last 10 years and thought, ‘awesome!’?
I personally thought Waterboy was a funny flick after you’ve watched it a few times. It’s on the list of movies I will start watching on TV whenever I see it. After that, however, they are right. Garbage.
I think Will Ferrell is nipping at Sandler’s heels though. Let’s analyze his past 5 years:
- Old School: Loved it
- Elf: Eh
- Anchorman: Pretty good
- Kicking & Screaming: Awful
- Bewitched: Horrific
- Talladega Nights: Blech
- Blades of Glory: Unbearable
- Semi-Pro: Can’t make myself watch another Ferrell sports flick
- Step Brothers: Waiting on DVD.
I’ve heard some good things about Step Brothers, but the recent string of sports parody movies has made my Will Ferrell stock drop. Whose worse than Sandler or Ferrell? Tell me in the comments.

Mike Myers has become awful as well. I will never spend the 90 minutes required to catalog all the reasons why “love guru” sucks. Ever. I loved Wayne’s World and even Wayne’s World 2, but after the first Austin Powers I lost quite a bit of interest.
I will say that I really enjoyed Punchdrunk Love. I like quirky movies.
There aren’t that many people from SNL after Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin to have huge careers. Or make more than a handful of leading role type movies. Chris Kataan is terrible. Jimmy Fallon can disappear from the face of the earth for all I care. Rob Schneider can never be anything besides the “goofy looking guy from Sandler’s movies”. David Spade and Farley had a few “funny when high” movies. But who else besides Murphy and Martin were even good outside of SNL? Certainly not Tim Meadows as The Ladies Man. Charles Grodin? Kevin Nealon on Weeds is pretty good. But he can never be a lead.
Just wondering who you thought had GOOD resumes post SNL? It’s almost like you could name anyone besides the old school obvious guys (Murphy, Belushi, Akroyd, and Martin). Or you could even include Piscopo in the “never did anything else” category.

I think if Farley hadn’t died, he would still be making decent movies.
Tina Fey does great work but I guess she is more of a writer than an actor.

Justin and I love Tina Fey! Haha
I definitely choose Sandler any day over the other SNL people, especially over Will Ferrel who I can no longer stand.

This will easily make for some “oh, that’s his problem” responses, but I have always liked Will Ferrell. Ever since Tom Green was the guest host of one SNL episode I think during a Thanksgiving episode or something and Tom Green and Will Ferrell went out into the crowd dressed as turkeys. They entered from different sides of the audience and raced towards each other only to make out in the middle of the audience. I about died laughing. Don’t know why and don’t really care. I actually saw Kicking and Screaming in the theater. Guess it helps that I’m a Bears fan…
And Bewitched was awful, but I still liked Ferrell. I might have to go see Step Brothers.
And I forgot about Tina Fey, but I don’t think “Baby Momma” or whatever the hell it was called was worth even the money at the $2 theater…or $3 theater if you don’t feel like the matinee.

For all the crap they’ve made, Sandler has “Reign Over Me” on his resume, and Ferrell has “Stranger Than Fiction.”
When either of them really want to work at it, they have chops.
But I guess chops don’t always translate to cash.
Hence, “The Longest Yard” remake.

I really liked Reign over Me, but I’m a sucker for Don Cheadle.

Well, I agree that Sandler’s post-SNL resume hasn’t been great but it hasn’t been absolutely horrible. Worst post-SNL career would have to go to someone like Kattan or Cheri Oteri. One of the best that hasn’t been mentioned is Bill Murray who had hit after hit for a time there. Also, Martin was never a member of SNL just a guest or guest host.

I like Will Ferrell, as well. I wasn’t a fan of “Kicking and Screaming,” but most of his other stuff I like. “Stranger Than Fiction” was probably my favorite of his. The cast was great, and he did a good job.
My wife and I are looking forward to “Step Brothers” with great trepidation. We think it looks funny, but we’re not sure if it will be funny…but we’re going to give it a chance.
Sandler’s movies did go downhill. I liked “50 First Dates” though.

Step Brothers was great. Funniest movie Will has done so far.

Lets not forget the illustrious careers of Martin Short and Chevy Chase though we’re still talking old school SNL.

Mark:
Just a personal opinion, but doing “Caddyshack” gets you a lifetime free pass on doing crap.

His more serious movies are the best. I loved stranger than fiction.
His humor was depleted in Talledega Nights. Everything after that seemed pretty downhill.

True about Caddyshack…but also all of the National Lampoon’s.

Christmas Vacation is most quotable Christmas movie ever.

I think Anchorman is one of the funniest movies ever. And Stranger Than Fiction is a favorite as well. I liked Sandler’s Punch Drunk Love, and Reign Over Me was good too, but note that neither were comedies. Has anyone seen Zohan?
