Found Near UE: Black Dog

Thursday, July 3rd, I found a black dog in the soccer fields off Vann Avenue on the East Side of Evansville. When I got to her, it was just as I thought: worn out, a little hurt, dehydrated, and hungry. My sister and I took her to Parkdale Animal Hospital, who was great and did everything and supplied everything for free. Right now, we are giving her medicine for her bandaged paws, and trying to get her enough food and water so she fills back out.
This dog is black, female, and appears to be young. She had short-hair and is medium to large, very sweet. We think, as did the vet, that she is pure American Pit Bull Terrier, aka. Pit Bull. We looked her breed up, and despite the stigma, pit bulls are known as being great companions and good around around adults, children, and other pets alike.
From her paw pads and how thin she has gotten, she looks to have been out for a week or so, but her health otherwise and her nice coat suggest she does have a home. We have put up ads and flyers looking for her home.
If you know anything about her, or even if she could be someone’s you know, please double check and let us know. Right now we are looking for her home, but just in case we can’t find it :( if you are interested in adopting her, have a good home for her to be indoors and out with a big yard and can take good care of her, also let me know. Hopefully we will find he parents though.

She’s beautiful! If I was allowed to have a Pit Bull (darn apartment complex), I would gladly take her in. They are wonderful companions and incredibly smart.

She really is a beautiful dog, furthermore is an extremely sweet dog who has been wagging her tail everytime she sees us, and now that she’s starting to feel better you can see her energy pick up and she’s a very loving playful girl!
Robin…hrmm….maybe you can just change apartment complexes ;)

Please contact me at (812)435-5355 or at (812)483-8130. This is my daughter’s dog. She was frightened by the fireworks last Wednesday evening and she jumped the fence and ran. We notified the Vanderburgh County Humane Society and the Dog Pound and left our information on her to call with anyone who reported her found.
We were contacted by the Humane Society yesterday and given a name of Jenna Walker with her phone number. We spoke to her and was supposed to meet to pick her up and we can’t get a return phone call. We can prove this is our dog. Please contact us immediately.
Thank you!

Um, yeah. I found the dog all messed up on Thursday. Yesterday I was contacted, and I told them I would call when I got off work. Unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to call until today when I got off work.
By that point I had 15 missed calls, my sister had about the same amount, and somehow they’d gotten my house number and called twice, and furthermore, which really irked me, my dad’s private office number and left a message there during their lunch hour. Probably 30 calls in 24 hours.
Towards the end of the day, the calls had messages attached that they had contacted a lawyer, and were going to press charges against me because they were considering the dog stolen property.
I immediately called and explained that I had fully intended to call them yesterday, but something happened that didn’t allow me to, and today I worked all up to the point that I called back. I said that it had been only 24 hours since I had first talked to them, but I had received 15 calls alone, not counting the 15 other calls made to my sister, house, and father’s office. I explained that I don’t know how they got those numbers since my name isn’t publicly connected to any, but I wasn’t sure it was legal, and I was sure it was harassment and I didn’t appreciate it.
Next, I explained that it had only been 24 hours since I talked to him, and that in absolutely no way was this considered theft, especially since they didn’t know my schedule or that I hadn’t had some emergency from preventing my contacting them, and that they new I worked during the day, and at my work I don’t have cell access. Thus, they had no reason to assume that I was holding their dog hostage (as they made very clear in a voice mail that they thought I was). Obviously, I have been making a clear effort to get this dog back to its owner though flyers, Its Evansville, WIKY, craigslist, Humane Society, Courier, and other internet ads.
I then went on to explain that I found their dog hurt, dehydrated, and hungry, took it upon myself to take it to the vet to get checked out and scanned for a microchip, which it didn’t have (along with no collar or tattoo which some dogs have), then fed/water her and give pain/antibiotic pills for a week. I explained that I had to carry the dog to the yard on the first day so that she could go to the bathroom bc she was too weak to walk. And furthermore, took the dog back to my personal vet (not Parkdale) for a check up on her paws to make sure they were healing, and paid $35 of my own money for it.
After explaining all that, I told them that I in no way appreciated the harassment and threats to my family or I since I have done nothing but take excellent care of their lost dog while actively looking for them.

Furthermore, may I just state that I spent my 4th of July putting up flyers all over town for their dog? My 4th of July for crying out loud, had to miss a movie with my bf because of it. And they were seriously trying to press charges? Come on people. Seriously? I carried there like 60 lb dog to my car and took her to the vet, and then home until I could find her owners! Charges!? Seriously!? COME ON.
As you can tell, I’m still very upset about them.

Dear lord. I’m so sorry that you had to deal with all of this! I understand that the owners were probably concerned about the well-being of a much-loved member of their family (let’s hope that’s the excuse, anyway), but I’m not sure what they were trying to accomplish by the unnecessary harassment and disrespect. You should have been thanked for your help…many people in their situation would never see their dog again, but this dog was blessed enough to wander into YOUR hands for help and to get home.
I applaud everything you did in this situation. I wish every lost dog were so lucky :(

Wait, did anyone notice that they lost the dog like 24 hrs before you found her? They said they’ve been looking for her since 7/2, but you found her 7/3. I know you originally thought she had been stray for about a week or so, causing the low weight/pad wounds/etc, but that’s obviously not the case. If she was in their care up until the time you found her, how did she get in such bad shape? coughneglectcough

jenna — smile knowing you briefly helped an animal that obviously isn’t cared for. karma loves people with benevolent hearts. i applaud you. [but, yes, i’d seriously consider looking into they got (and used) private numbers.]

To all that replied. Yes this was my dog! I understand how you all feel but you were not in my situation. My dog “Abby” got out Wednesday night, 3 blocks of power went out and I stepped outside to see what was going on. My dog heard fireworks and flipped out. I had rescued this dog from dog fighting about three years ago, and any loud noise as of fireworks and thunderstorms she is very frightened by. I had just took off of her collar because we were in for the night and she was about to get a bath. When she got out people continued to let fireworks go. She took off running and I could not look for her immediately because my 18 month old was asleep. I waited till someone got there so I could look for her. I looked for her in my neighborhood and surrounding areas till 1am. She was found over 5 miles away that next morning! We were told that we could come by and see if that was her at 3pm that day. We then heard nothing back. I then seen this webpage were people could possibly see her and adopt her. I freaked out thinking that she would get into the wrong hands since I have already rescued her from that situation. At noon the next day my father receives a call that they did not know that they were going to return the dog since she looked like she had been out for awhile. I then went to the vets office that they originally took her to and the vet stated that the dog was in good health and was fine besides her paws which were from running all night. I then yes started to call them several times and contacted my attorney. They had told my dad also that their was a vet bill needing to be paid and the vet confirmed it that he did it all for free as it says in this posting. I did not know these people or what their intentions were. She called at 4pm the next day stated that she had a family emergency and was unable to call the night before. I apologized and told her that I was concerned not hearing from her then got accused of mistreating my animal that is why things happened the way they did. All of it was miscommunication. When we met to get the dog back I thanked them for their help in getting my dog back and offered them money to take care of the vet bills. They said it was fine. I do appreciate what they did and was glad to see that she did not end up in the wrong hands. Glad to see that some good people still exist today with all the dog fighting and misconceptions of the pit bull breed.

Where does it say anything about adopting this dog on “It’s Evansville?” - It doesn’t and it was wrong to assume that.
No one said anything about keeping the dog.
Do any of the people on It’s Evansville seem like the dog fighting kind?
Threatening anyone with a lawyer without proper evidence is dangerous to your credibility as well as a nasty way to communicate with someone who has your so called “beloved” dog.

(1) we NEVER said we were not giving the dog back or were questioning them, we had her paws checked out one more time to make sure they were healing and didn’t need anything else, we had that done at 2, they couldn’t even meet til 5:30, so why not do something nice and do that for them so they wouldn’t have to worry about it
(2) We NEVER asked them to pay a vet bill. Ever. It was free.
(3) On here, I said something about adoption because I KNOW the people on here, and know they’d be a good home w/o doubt, but I was going to do everything in my power to find her owners. Obviously this was posted days before I found them. May I state that I also spent my weekend looking for ads for her online and then posting them all over the internet myself?
I completely understand someone having a great concern about their dog, I would if it were my pet, for sure. But using a private data base to find my private numbers—which I can only assume is what happen since my name is in no way publicly links to those numbers, and then harassing us with 30+ phone calls & theft charge threats b/w 8am & 3pm while it is TOTALLY reasonable to assume someone is at work and can’t answer a cell, and it had been ONLY 24 hours? It was just beyond ridiculous.
I am more than happy we found her owners. That was all I wanted from the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, Abby was the perfect guest. Very well behaved and more than sweet. But I knew her owners were looking for her and that she had a good home, that’s why I spent so.long. looking for them so.hard.
@gmwong—I did mention adopting in the article, but that was only because if after a good extended amount of time, if we couldn’t find her owners, we wouldn’t be able to keep her since we already have other pets. But I’d never give her to someone without knowing them and checking them out, especially with the pit bull fighting & breed stigma.
I absolutely understand all the concern. I would have it too. I just didn’t appreciate the way it was handled. Especially since it was only 1 day and it was during work hours….and the personal miss-use of a private system….and theft charge threats…..

Justin, Cali could only take Abby through annoyance. Eventually, Abby would get so annoyed that she would give in to Cali. That’s Cali’s only threat—annoyance through jumping and yipping ;)

Jenna,
I don’t know what private data base you are talking about, and the “private number” you are talking about was the main line that is in the phone book, that was the only number that we called besides your cell number and your sisters. All that information was giving to us at the vets office of where you said you took her on this website!
Krystal Mastison
July 14, 2008 @ 06:09AM
And furthermore -
gmwong -
1) Adoption issue read original article.
2) Are you positive that no one mention keeping the dog or is that just your assumption, cause I could forward the voice mail if you would like!
3) Do you know everyone on this website personally? Then you have no idea if people would be the dog fighting kind. This website is public to millions of people….honestly you think someone is going to announce that they are into dog fighting??
Jenna
July 14, 2008 @ 06:33AM
hate to break it, but while that number is in the phone book, my name is not* listed in the phone book, nor is connected to my house phone number. I don’t even know my actual house number off the top of my head. Also, someone called my father’s office, which is completely insane. If anyone mentioned “keeping the dog” at most it would’ve been mentioned to keep the dog to take it to the follow up appointment about her paws like planned, besides, its not like you or myself could even meet until hours after that follow up appointment. I know many people on this website, and would ONLY let someone who I knew adopt an animal, yours, mine, or anyone elses. I am a huge animal person and would never blindly give an animal away without knowing someone well. On this website, many people I know well.
Jenna
July 14, 2008 @ 06:37AM
Furthermore, your father went to the vet at 2pm when he thought I was going to be there. Those calls at other numbers started hours before that. Also, private businesses are not allowed to give out private information no matter what the situation unless the person says it is okay to give their private information out or they are subpoenaed. The only number of mine they have is my cell, because that’s the only number I use and would EVER have given anyone since I don’t even know what my home phone is since we only have it for emergencies. Pretty sure that v. job a prosecutors office w/ data base makes it pretty clear.

I think we can all assert that Jenna did a good deed and this people overreacted with their response to her.
