Gas Is $4. Memorial Day Travel Is Cancelled.

5

As I was leaving the gym this morning, I couldn’t help but notice that the price at the Thornton’s on Burkhardt Road was $3.99 for regular unleaded. $4 gas has finally hit Evansville. If you ask the heads of the major oil companies they will claim their huge profits are a result of the fundamental laws of supply and demand being at work.

With the prices so high, I know I am second guessing any trip out of the house I need to take. Putting $60 into my gas tank a week is not how I want to spend my money. With Memorial Day this weekend, I’m sure there are others that are curtailing any planned travel in exchange for just hanging out in the city.

The Otters just opened their season yesterday evening, which is a great way to see a baseball game without having to travel to St. Louis or Cincinnati. Not only is minor league baseball fun, but the beer is much cheaper.

Wesselman’s Park and Nature Preserve will be offering several classes this weekend to entice the outdoorsman in you. There is an intro to hiking and backpacking course Sunday at 1PM and a canoe trip down Pigeon Creek at 2PM. If boats aren’t your thing, there is also a wildflower walk through the Weetlands at 2PM.

And if you’re more of a hermit like me, I’m sure there are several TV marathons and baseball games on TV to keep you occupied.

If you’re staying in town this Memorial Day, feel free to chime in with what you’re up to.

Well…glad I got gas yesterday, when it was still $3.74 sigh …remember when it used to be $1.50…..and that was high? I wish we could go back to that high….

LOL. I remember about 10 or so years ago when me and my friends would complain if gas hit $1 a gallon. Back in the late 90’s it was common to see gas selling at 79 cents a gallon. I took a road trip to Florida my senior year in high school (1998) and we paid less for gas round trip back then than I would pay now just to get halfway down there. It’s kinda scary how far things have gotten in just 10 years.

Was wanting to go to the Rendezvous in Vincennes and/or Oakland City to see my high-school friend Chanel who I haven’t seen since last summer…

Now, might just settle for a picnic in a local park and a movie. My boyfriend wants to go see Indiana Jones tonight but… gulp. We went and saw Iron Man earlier this week without waiting for the 5 buck club price to kick in. ANOTHER full-price movie in the same week?

It wouldn’t hurt nearly so bad if I weren’t sending at least half my monthly income to my student-loan lenders (I’m going well beyond minimums, sending as much as I can scrape by with and still have a little emergency cushion. This is a terrible time to be in debt and I will never really be able to relax until I’m out of it. Probably not then, either, if the economy keeps going this way.)
