Music Spotlight: Philpot
What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?
The name of our band is Philpot. I owned a shirt in the past that said Philpot on it. It was a political shirt that my Grandmother had picked up at Democratic convention near Hammond. We were brainstorming for names for the band and really couldn’t come with anything that wasn’t already taken on napster ( when napster was free) so we decided to call ourselves Philpot after the shirt I was wearing at the time.
How long have you been together?
7 years.
Who is in the band and what instruments do they play?
My name is Kentz Ward and I’m the lead singer of the band. Caleb Smith and Josh Kennedy are our guitarists. Tyler Evans plays bass. A.J Boone handles the Keyboard/Piano. Arthur Ready is our percussionist.
How did you get together?
My brother was in a band that consisted of two of the members that now reside in this band. They eventually split up and I decided I wanted to start a band myself with Josh Kennedy, who was local ,and my cousin A.J Boone, who at the time lived in Robinson IL.
Josh and Caleb had been in the band with my brother and were also classmates of his at Dugger Union High School. Caleb had been playing in another band and we decided to add him because he was a good friend of ours and we wanted to fill up our rhythm and lead section. Once we had our strong guitar section we were in desperate need of a bass player. My brother and a few friends had told us about Tyler Evans from Linton, which isn’t far from Dugger (where we practice, rehearse and the band was formed). So he basically auditioned and we loved his sound and kept him. Arthur Ready, an excellent Jazz/Rock drummer from Sullivan, was later added, which finally completed our 6 member group we now call Philpot.
What type of music do you prefer playing?
Good Rock N Roll
What band(s) do you most sound like?
Hard to say. We listen to a lot of bands. I think we have our own sound.
Where is the best place to play in town and why?
There isn’t anywhere to play in our little town really. We really like the Verve in Terre Haute because we pack it in and we like the people who work there.
What is your favorite song to play live? Why?
“Jesus On A Chain”. It’s a new song. It’s very powerful. And no we are not a Christian band.
Whose your favorite local band (besides your own)?
Precore and Voxt Revolution are two bands. They are both great friends of ours.
What are your musical aspirations?
To be the biggest and best band we can be.
Where can we see you play around town?
April 18 at the USI Springfest. We go on around 8:55. Before the show on the 18th, we’ll be hanging out at Joe’s Records around 5PM. April 20th we’re at Woodys at 10PM.
