Music Spotlight: DeafMegan

Comments | Add A Comment

It’s Evansville is starting a new recurring feature that will spotlight local and regional musicians that are playing shows around Evansville. If you are a local musician, contact It’s Evansville editor Justin Williams to schedule your profile.

What’s the name of your band and what’s the origin of it?

Our bands name is DeafMegan and the origin of the name comes from a television show on Showtime called Weeds. It’s a characters name.

How long have you been together?

We’ve only been together about 4 months now collectively.

Who is in the band and what instruments do they play?

Justin Waddington - Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Sam Rice - Bass Guitar
Seth Grundhoefer - Lead Guitar
Riley Fugate - Trumpet, Vocals
Cory Seib - Keyboards, Vocals
Jordan Willis - Drums

How did you get together?

I started writing songs when I moved down to Evansville from Indy for college. I met Cory in choir and we started playing small acoustic shows together. At our first show, we met our bassist Sam.

Sam played small acoustic shows too and we played for each other over the next year or so, opening for each other and things of that nature. Sam grew up with Seth and they played in their high school’s choir band together. I knew he could play so we started jamming together.

I met Riley Fugate in choir the same year I met Cory, but I didn’t utilize his trumpet abilities until I started recording a solo CD. Jordan Willis lived above me at school and I played guitar for him once for a talent show at USI and I knew he could play drums. When I started recording my CD, I realized that we could all just combine and form and band, and thats what happened.

What type of music do you prefer playing?

We all prefer to play something different when we are playing separately, but together we like to play music that no one has ever heard before. Music thats easy to listen to, but also fun. Music that incorporates all the instruments we have. Music that conveys emotion.

What band(s) do you most sound like?

I haven’t really come across anyone that sounds like us.

Where is the best place to play in town?

Well, the only place we’ve played thus far as a band is Boney Junes, and its a pretty rad place. It’s big enough for all six of us on stage and they have an amazing sound system.

What is your favorite song to play live?

We like all the songs we play, we don’t really have a favorite, but we all converse and decide as a group which songs to play.

Whose your favorite local band?

The only band we can really think of is Valley Tide. When I played solo, we played with them and they were good. They aren’t from here though, but pretty close.

What are your musical aspirations?

To make music for a living, and to make a difference.

Where can we see you play around town?

Boney Junes on February 29th and hopefully we can find some other places to play.

I really love these guys! They’re insanely awesome!! I didn’t realize they’ve only been together for four months. That’s amazing for their sound.

One of my best friends saw them live and brought home a CD. I was like, “Great, this is nice…” and then she popped it in and it totally blew me away. They’ve got a great sound and some really funny songs. :)
