Evansville Commissioners — Buying Booze at Gas Stations Is Bad

Comments | Add A Comment

In Vanderburgh county, you can drive to Frontier or Kwik Liquors and pick up a six pack of beer, but you can’t buy booze when you fill up your gas tank. Evansville commissioners claim they don’t want to compromise safety for convenience. Currently grocery stores, liquor stores and restaurants can serve alcohol but gas stations cannot.

The premise baffles me. What is the difference between getting out of your car at a gas station or a liquor store and picking up a case of beer. Either way you have alcohol in your car. If you really want to pop that first can open and drink and drive, inconveniencing someone into having to go to two stores is not going to curtail it.

Am I wrong? Tell me in the comments.

I tend to agree. Growing up in Henderson, there used to be a liquor store with a drive thru window. Think about that.

When I moved to Florida (from Evansville) I was surprised to find alcohol at gas stations. What surprised me even more was that they sold it cold. Six years later I find it to be the norm. And it only brings in more business for them.

Is there a rash of accidents caused by drivers being under the influence? Nope.

I also grew up in Henderson. They still have drive in windows at liquor stores, plus you can buy COLD beer at gas stations and convenient stores.
