Who Saw That Coming? Weinzapfel Wins

Comments | Add A Comment

No one claimed it was going to be a close race, and it certainly wasn’t. In the biggest victory margin ever, Jonathan Weinzapfel defeated David J. Nixon with over 85% of the vote. It really wasn’t even a contest with Nixon being shunned by the GOP because of the $12000 in unpaid child support that was tacked to his name.

The night went pretty much the same way for all the Democratic candidates. The Evansville City Council now is also in Democratic power with Curt John, Dan Adams, and Keith Jarboe winning the at large seats. Republican Andrew “Sewers Before Stadium” Smith finished in 5th. Democrat Missy Mosby took the 2nd Ward, while Stephen Melcher, John Friend and BJ Watts took the 3rd, 5th and 6th wards respectively.

Turnout was pretty sad for such a large city. A little over 15,000 votes were cast in the mayoral race. Hopefully turnout will be higher next year when we have two big local elections. Obviously there is the presidential election, but we’ll also be reelecting (or replacing) congressional representative Brad Ellsworth. For now though, let’s enjoy a few weeks of not having political ads everywhere.
