East Side Review: Los Bravos

Comments | Add A Comment

Today we bring you a review of what seems to be a staple in Evansville, Los Bravos. The majority of the Evansville area will probably be familiar with this Mexican food, but newcomers to the area or college students who haven’t yet ventured out should know Los Bravos is a good find.

The buildings clearly establish what type of restaurant it is on the outside, with bright orange paint. Inside is not overly done up, but still tries to offer a sense of the Latino vibe. The walls are done in murals of Mexican-town life, while windows are filled with Mexican-style pottery and figures. Even the chairs and highchairs are vibrantly painted.

This evening, there were three of us. After being seated, we were immediately served chips & salsa and placed our drink orders. The salsa was good in flavor, but rather runny as opposed to chunky. We ordered the #5—2 enchiladas, rice, and beans, #29—burrito supremo, & nachos with beef. The #5 meal was off the dinner menu list where everything costs either $5.75 or $5. The enchiladas were ground beef rolled into a corn tortilla with cheese and enchilada sauce over it. I enjoyed that dish, and it was plenty to eat, with lots of food left on my plate. My dining partners also enjoyed their burrito and nachos, finding both to taste good and be plenty of food.

Other dinner options include the fajitas, chimichanga, or flautas. If you come at lunch, there are great lunch specials for $3.50 or $4.50. Try the Speedy Gonzolez, or my personal favorite, the Quesadilla Suprema. Don’t forget to try the cheese dip. They offer a range of beers, and of course a long list of alcohol, including margaritas.

All in all, I enjoy Los Bravos. The restaurant is clean, nice and polite waiters, great prices, and very speedy service. The food is good, and always consistent. My only qualm is how some of the waiters, especially in the kitchen, tend to ogle at some of the female customers, as it can sometimes become awkward.

That aside, I do suggest Los Bravos as it is one of the top Mexican places in town. However, I think I will always prefer the taste of Acapulco better.

Los Bravos is located at 834 Tutor Lane (behind Sonic & Qdoba), (812) 474-9078; 3534 N. 1st Ave (behind Arby’s), (812) 424-4101; and 4630 W. Lloyd Expressway, (812) 464-3163. Mon-Thurs 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11am-10:30pm, Sun 11am-9pm.

I prefer Acapulco and El Charro to Los Bravos, but I love eating at their West side location. The fountain in the round is neat.

Is there a bad mexican restaurant in town?

We ate at Los Bravos about a month ago. It impressed me so much that I can’t remember what I ordered. It was ok, but nothing special. I would eat there again, but I want to try out other Mexican restaurants in the area first to hopefully find something more authentic and flavorful. So far, I have only made it to Abuelos and El Rio. I got extrememly sick after eating at Abuelos (eventhough I really liked their food and atmosphere), and although I don’t know that their food caused it, it put me off Mexican for a year! El Rio was not tasty at all, so Los Bravos was at the very least a step up from that. You are right on the salsa being runny; it was very mild too. As far as the staff oogling too much, that seems to come along with Mexican culture.

In response to Christina and her comment about Mexicans: They aren’t the only ones who “oogle” chicks. This can and will happen in ANY restaurant, regardless of the ethinicity of who works there. Trust me, I’ve been a server for years. As soon as any remotely hot chick enters the building, it gets put on a psychic “server internet” and we all make turns doing fly-bys to get a peek at whatever goodies are on display. Believe it.

Anyhow…

I love Los Bravos. Everything about it is great EXCEPT:

  1. The guacamole sucks. Hacienda has better guacamole. I’m not even sure if the guac at Los Bravos is real.

  2. They use a LOT of MSG in their food. I always feel really, really sleepy whenever I finish eating a meal from there. I know of no other place I’ve EVER eaten at that seems to have more MSG in their dishes.

  3. The food and drink prices are all relatively decent except for the margaritas. In my opinion they are definitely overpriced, and never seem very strong. Then again I’m used to having my buddies at Hacienda make margaritas that will knock an average man out.

Other than those small complaints I think Los Bravos is definitely worth checking out.

Someone mentioned that the salsa tends to be runny… I don’t agree. Every time I’ve gone there the salsa has been much thicker than other Mexican restaurants’ offerings. Plus they have a spicy salsa which is even thicker and pretty damn hot. (And this is coming from a guy who loves spicy!)

If you haven’t been to a Los Bravos I’d definitely recommend it.

You might want to make a correction in the location information at the end…Los Bravos on First Ave is behind Ritzy’s? As of 9:30 last night, it was still situated behind the Arby’s.
