Weekend Open Thread

I’m going to try something different. I’m taking the labor day weekend off from the site to recharge my batteries a bit. Between client work, trying to finish my book (pre-order it now people!) and writing here, I’m worn out and need a few days of rest. If something comes up over the next few days you want to talk about, use the comments here. If you want to talk about the merits of Starbucks vs. Penny Lane, use it here. I honestly don’t care. I just ask that you follow the comment guidelines and are halfway civil towards each other.
This might fall flat on its face, or it might work. We’ll see. :)
I’ll be back Tuesday.

how about this, does anyone have any “secret” favorite things to do or go to? Such as things that are off the beaten path and not well known at all!

I’m all about the secret stuff, alas, there’s not much of that around Evansville.
It’s a beautiful weekend, get outside and enjoy it! My wife and I always enjoy walking around somewhere. Typically, it was on the UE campus, which is still beautiful, but under lots of construction right now. Another good bet is the old state hospital site off Lincoln. You might be surprised. (It’s not local, but check out the Cincinnati public park system if you’re in that area sometime. It’s really pretty impressive considering what public parks are usually like.)
Star-gazing is a good idea also, and another of our favorites. Watch the mosquitoes right now though. You’ll have to leave the city limits to get any good views though. A telescope would be handy, and bring a blanket. Too bad there’s not a good observatory in the area.
For Monday, have a cookout. It’s a lost art and activity. Do it as a family or call up some friends. If you don’t have either one of these, try getting a group of neighbors together. Just tell those interested t provide certain parts of a meal. If you don’t know your neighbors, now is a good time to do so.
We also enjoy visiting the small communities around the tri-state. We enjoy walking around and checking out what little towns have to offer. Farmer’s markets are a favorite of ours, and little cafes. Joining in on any annual “whatever-days” festivals is always fun. I think Evansville has become too large for this, but every small town has something they’re known for, and celebrates it annually. Strawberry, watermelon, corn, pork, whatever, there’s a festival for it somewhere. It’s always fun because there’s stuff to do, but everyone knows you’re an outsider. They’re usually more than friendly though.

And I totally don’t intend to advertise, so, remove it if I’m breaking some forum rule here. I don’t even go anymore, and haven’t for quite some time. It’s gotten to big for me now.
WAY off the beaten path, for most anyway, in a manner of speaking.

Ah, LAN parties. Reminds me of high school when I ran the Project X facility in Newburgh. Those were the days. Didn’t make much money off of it, but it was a lot of fun, and I got a feature in the paper for it.

Heres a cool article I found today on movie sequels. I agree with pretty much all of it.
