Open Thread: Reflecting On The Summer Movie Season

Back in May I had an open thread asking what summer movies people were most looking forward to. Now that the summer movie season is essentially passed, let’s reflect.
What was the best movie you saw this summer? Was it something you thought was going to be great? What was the biggest flop in your opinion? Going into the fall, what movie are you most looking forward to seeing?
Personally, my favorite blockbuster film of the summer was Die Hard. Cool stunts and a fun way to spend 2 hours.

This summer’s been about half and half - some pleasant surprises, some not-so-pleasant surprises:
THE GOOD: Knocked Up, 300, Super Bad, Paris, Je T’aime, Ratatouille, Sicko, The Simpsons Movie, Transformers (I liked it, so sue me)
THE MEDIOCRE: Grindhouse (at least QT’s half), Die Hard 4.0, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Spider-man 3
THE AWFUL: Blades of Glory

quite a few co-workers liked Disturbia. funny, none have ever seen Rear Window…which Disturbia blatantly stole from.

Die Hard kicked ass! I would see it over and over again! It was better than the previous ones.
Also, it was more like spring time but the 3rd Hannibal was AWESOME! I loved it. Those two were probably my favorite all year so far.
Jenna Jameson porn came in a close third…. :)

zrx1200r, its retarded how many good movies are not shown in the theaters around here. Do Showplace and Stadium 16 really need to show the same movie on 8 screens a night?

Justin, Calling something ‘retarded’ is not cool. Stupid, ridiculous, etc. would be much better. That is just offensive.

agreed, Mrs. Folz…. we know Justin, it’s your website, those that are offended don’t have to read it, blah blah blah. but you should realize that if there was someone mentally disabled in your life i’m sure you wouldn’t say things like that, especially in a public forum.
when i said things like that, as a child, of course, my mother would say “your own kids my end up with a handicap and you will regret saying that”. and she’s right… you never know when bad karma might come into play my friend.

I have had people with mental retardation in my life, and I still have no problem saying something is retarded. Sorry if you are offended, but I’m not going to alter my speech..

Very disappointed to read this use of this term, with a mentally challenged member of my family, I lost a lot of respect for you there Justin…

Justin, I have to agree with judymarie here. Your site is turning out to be more than just a blog. It’s gaining the respect of other media outlets. I would hate to see a slip of words end that for you, not to mention prevent people from advertising on your site, or what few advertisers you have, leave (loss of revenue).

Back on topic: how about Bourne Ultimatum? I loved that movie.

I loved Bourne, especially the scene saying “oh I doubt that….because if you were in your office we’d be having this conversation face to face.” best ever.

sadly, there just isn’t enough money in movies that aren’t hollywood blockbuster mega-advertised cliche-ridden formulaic tripe…which is what the general populace goes for.
i’d love to open, or even for the city to have, an art house for non-major budget films, especially foreign. Volver is stunning. did it ever play here?
give it a few yrs though, and there’ll be a re-make. hollywood studios have been re-making japanese horror movies for several yrs (and only one, The Ring, was better than the original). i just found out that a korean movie released two yrs ago is being re-made: A Tale of Two Sisters.
okay, rant over.

Wow that last post was a hell of a lot more offensive than Justin’s post and he did not use the word in the context that some of you are accusing him of.

Update: I saw the worst movie ever last night: TMNT. I can still watch the old live action movies for some cheesy nostalgia, but this thing was just bad.

Sorry, should have warned you about that one. I actually didn’t bother to finish it, which is uncommon for me.
