Open Thread: Are You Ready for Some Football?

(American) football season is upon us, so let’s talk about it. Whether you’re interested in high school, college or the pros football is quickly becoming the new national pastime in our country. Are you excited that the local high school teams are back on the field? Are you looking forward to the college games starting in two weeks, or are you eating up all of the preseason NFL games?
Personally, I’m most looking forward to seeing how well Purdue can do this year. Purdue’s schedule is tough, but it’s my duty as alumni to be positive and think we are going to annihilate Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame.
How about you? What teams are you following this year? Let’s use the open thread to talk some pigskin!

Football is “quickly becoming the new national pastime in our country”? Quickly becoming? Where have you been for the past 25 years…football has been the biggest sport in this country for decades.

hey buddy i hate to be critical but Michigan is spelled m-i-c-h-i-g-a-n, not m-i-c-h-i-a-g-n. A for effort though.

Regarding your Purdue comments, are you talking “fantasy” football?

Couldn’t care less,,,, WAY to much emphasis placed on tossing a ball and and not enough on academics in high school & colleges, and the pros are just over paid spoiled brats who should have to get a REAL job like everyone else.

I have to admit that I was there in Indy when the Colts arrived; much to my surprise. It was a pretty cool experience. I’ve been a Colts fan ever since, even when it wasn’t cool to be a Colts fan. Now that they are playing well, GO COLTS!! :)

I have played Soccer pretty much all my life, but i really enjoy watching American Football. So what if the first American football game was played with Soccer like rules. We should at least agree to disagree and sign up to play them in the many leagues here in town. What a great country we have here that we can watch college and pro football pretty much all day long, thanks ESPN Classic. Oh by the way Notre Dame is my Fav and GO COLTS.

go Purdue, colts and WKU “even though U of F is going to walk all over us in gainsville.” And for everyone who thinks that soccer is is the worlds sport no its not its a cheap sport for cheap people in the US we play sport that take lots of money. how to explain soccer you kick a ball, you can’t cross this line or touch it with your hands, you have to fake an injury to get a call and first team to one wins. Football have to have 7 guys on the line of scrimmage, you get hurt on every play, can use hands every play, and first team to 21 might still not win. Soccer may be for the world but Football is for the US. And no Beckman is not going to saving a MLS it’s behind poker on tv ratings.

Moving to Class 2A and loss of so much talent not withstanding, the coaching staff at perennial West Side contender Mater Dei somehow seem to repeatedly get the very best out of fine young men. This year’s senior leadership provided by Brad Neimeir (sp?) at center, play maker Alex Weinzapel at wide-out, and pounding it up in there by Brett Weinzaple will no doubt continue to be a pleasurable delight for those of us vicariously reliving our youthful memories through these fine young men’s gridiron exploits.
Go Wildcats. All the way to State 2A Champions!

Ugh…I hope the Colts do terrible this year.
I cannot handle seeing Peyton Manning’s Ginormous peanut head doing another commercial. And I hate all these stupid fair weather fans. One year its Green Bay, the next year The Patriots, oh wait…are the colts doing well?
TO THE STORES WE NEED COLTS STUFF!! UGH, annoying.

you seem very bitter against the NFL….hey, the Patriots are the colts rivals in every sense of the word, but I don’t hope they do terrible, just, that they are one step below us, the colts! But I agree, people should pick a team and stick to it. Yeah your team may not be in superbowl, but you can still root for another 2nd choice team so that you are in the spirit. As for colts gear—I’ll take a jersey please, and a peyton too

Well, after graduating from Castle, it only seems natural that I would live in football country. We have a lot to love here in Buckeye country!
The Buckeyes finally open this weekend in “The Shoe” against Youngstown State, Coach Tressel’s former team. At least we can be proud of our football team’s winning tradition here, not like IU! But someone has to be the doormat. It may as well the team that dumped Bob Knight, another Buckeye great. Go Scarlet and Grey !!! Fight the team across the field, show them OHIO’s here! We also claim the best dam* band in the land, and rightfully so!
