Shameless Plug: New Column Online

The latest edition of my Courier & Press technology column is both in the print and online editions of today’s paper.
This week I give an overview of Apple’s iWork 08 office suite that was released last week. Apple seems primed to challenge Microsoft Office with this release, so I’d recommend checking it out if you are using a Mac (and you should be). You can read it by clicking here, or go pick up a copy of the paper so you can see my mug shot up close and personal.
If you want to read my past columns, check out the dotColumn archive.

As one who is entering the IT field, I am always more than interested to hear different takes. While I do think Mac has a LOT going for it, I am not sold yet.
Sure, I’d love to have one; much in the same way that I would love to have a Ferrari. For the price and my uses, the Mac and I just don’t seem to be a good fit.
In fact, I don’t think that there is a single machine or even OS out there for everyone - it all comes down to the end user, what they will be doing with the system, and how much they want to spend to get what they want.
I’m sure this has been covered somewhere along the line, but I’m new to the site and I’d like to hear what you feel the Mac has over the PC based world.

JW — congrats on your columns. make sure, though, you keep a record of your articles and payments. i wrote some family-outings columns a few yrs ago—not only does the paper pay peanuts, but they stiffed me for several columns. so, obviously, i quit submitting.

Mac vs. PC usually starts a holy war, so rather than opening a debate on the merits of Windows vs. Mac OS X, I will just state that I am an aesthetic person, and I’d rather have a stylish looking Mac sitting on my desk than a boring beige/black box that is covered with stickers, running Windows and crammed with lame trial software vendors like HP & Dell stick on their machines.
If you don’t care about aesthetics or drive an economy car because it just works then you probably aren’t a good candidate for a Mac. :)
I’m going to write some Mac OS X columns around October when Leopard is released.

No worries. I wasn’t planning to go all Jihad. As for anyone else, I can’t say… some have more time on their hands than I do.
Like I said, I just like to get other’s opinions on the technology and some of the reasons behind them.

It’s a PR shot from Numbers. There are a lot of screenshots and video demos on the site.
