iDay Live Blogging

  • 11:00AM - I am live at the Burkhardt AT&T store across from Wal Mart. I got here at 10:05AM and am camped out waiting for my phone. I am also the only person here. Come visit me!
  • 11:13AM - A woman inquired as to why I am the only person sitting in a lawn chair in front of a cell phone store.. I really had no answer.
  • 11:44AM - Several people have driven by asking me how many phones the store has. I invite them to sit with me, but they all have better things to do. So sad. This is a national holiday, people!
  • 11:52AM - Check this out. The mayor of Philadelphia is camping out for an iPhone.
  • 12:13PM - Less than 6 hours to go. ABC25 is running a story this evening about the iPhone, and are rumored to be stopping by to visit campers like myself.
  • 12:27 - ABC25 just stopped by to interview me. They said they’ll be back later this afternoon as well with the hopes that more people will show up. I hope I don’t look like a dope on TV!

  • 1:00PM: One of the best things about sitting out here is listening to the conversations of pissed off customers as they leave the store. They always make sure to start their tirade on the way out the door. It’s both funny and uncomfortable.
  • 1:19PM: We now have our second iPhone camper!
  • 1:23PM: I’ve done an impromptu interview of our second camper, and she is in fact purchasing an 8GB iPhone as well.
  • 1:25PM: We have our third camper!
  • 1:39PM: ABC25 is back and the fourth camper has arrived. He told his boss he is sick.

  • 2:06PM - Another informal poll. All 4 of us are getting 8GB iPhones. Anyone else coming to join us?
  • 2:25PM - Some woman just walked in talking about how ridiculous it is that we are sitting outside AT&T waiting for a phone. Whatever.
  • 2:45PM - We’re live on 14 WFIE. Thanks for reading!
  • 3:00PM - We’ve got our 5th camper here. He is a former Verizon subscriber. If anyone knows how many are over at the other stores in town, be sure to share in the comments.
  • 3:10PM - #6 has arrived.
  • 3:14PM - #7 has arrived. It looks like it’s going to rain pretty soon.
  • 3:27PM - More local news coverage (with photographs!). I am so not photogenic.
  • 3:29PM - The latest guy here is sporting an Apple T-Shirt. There’s becoming civil unrest towards the back of the line with loud iPhone fanatics.

  • 3:50PM - The AT&T employees keep coming out and chatting it up with everyone, which helps reduce the monotony. We’re less than an hour from the time the store plans to close (4:30PM).
  • 3:56PM - My yorkie, Cali Ray, came to visit the line!

  • 4:00PM - The 4PM tally is 11 people in line. I’m starting to get a bit tired from being outside for 6 hours. I don’t think I’ve ever been outside this long in my life.
  • 4:07PM - The line is about to be wrapped around so that the China Super Buffet doors aren’t blocked. Now that we’ve hit past 4PM, the after-work crowd is really going to start lining up.
  • 4:21PM - Here’s something to break up the monotony. This morning in New York, a Fox reporter had her mic stolen during an iPhone demo by Newsweek’s Steven Levy.
  • 4:27PM - The AT&T Store is preparing for lockdown mode. Only 90 minutes to my iPhone.
  • 4:32PM - The doors are locked and they are changing the posters in the windows at the store.
  • 4:53PM - My brother has an iPhone in his hand. Curse him!
  • 5:00PM - 1 HOUR TO GO. Also, the pizza man gained entry to the super secret locked down AT&T store.
  • 5:10PM - Here’s the latest shot of the line. ABC25 is setting up their live remote truck. No sign of any other news agencies yet.

- 5:21PM - I have breaking news. I am the first blogger to have a tan. I guess this is what i get for sitting out in the sun for 8 hours today.
- 5:31PM - Less than 30 minutes! The line is wrapping around.
- 5:36PM - Grandma called. I looked darling on TV.
- 5:39PM - Another Courier writer is on the scene. Wants to get my first impressions after I purchase my iPhone. Sure! I’m such a media whore.
- 5:45PM - The word has come in that everything is ready to go inside the store. Now it’s just a countdown to 6PM.
- 5:48PM - One last crowd shot. We’ve certainly crown since my single lawnchair. Happy iDay!

  • 5:50PM - “You guys are closed for normal people!?” Does that make me abnormal?
  • 6:26 - iHave iPhone
  • 6:49 - Our long national nightmare is over. I have iPhone. Thanks for reading and thanks to the very cool staff at the AT&T store on Burkhardt Road for helping out with the the live blogging setup.

Hope you start getting some company, have enough food and water… and that there’s a power outlet nearby! Cheers!

not going to lie Justin but i think your life just started to go down hill with you starting to wait outside a cell phone store and being the only one there. this is where someone says to you that you should go home and rethink your life if this is how you are spending your Friday.

Justin Williams

June 29, 2007 @ 12:01PM

I can justify this by being a member of the Apple media with MacZealots. :)

Justin Williams

June 29, 2007 @ 12:12PM

Yes, I have a sit-in for those occasions. I’m also going to have lunch over at Penn Station a few doors down.

Brian obviously hasn’t heard that Greg Packer has been at the 5th Avenue Apple Store since 5am Monday morning. Or that the mayor of Philadelphia arrived at an AT&T store at 3:30 am.

Woo! Justin!

cody

June 29, 2007 @ 03:18PM

Brian

June 29, 2007 @ 03:25PM

no I hadn’t heard but all that means is that i must be missing something really special since I’m not taking a week off of work to wait in line on a cell phone…remember its not a car, cpu, or even a video game system ITS A CELL PHONE oh btw justin there is only a 30-40% chance of rain the rest of the day

Hey Brian - Since your life seems so full and meaningful, I sm surprized that you have the time to spend here trying to make everyone uncomfortable.
Perhaps it is you who should do the re-thinking.
Justin is hurting no one and is not being rude. You might take a lesson.
