In case you’ve been living under a rock, Apple is releasing the iPhone today. While we’ve known about the iPhone since Macworld in January, the hype surrounding the phone has been building for months on end. The iPhone is seen as the holy grail of the cell phone industry — the device that aims to eliminate everything that we hate about our cell phones. The iPhone and its launch are so important, Verizon sent out a press release this morning letting the world know they still exist.

As the resident Evansville Apple nerd in town, I woke up at 5:30AM this morning to complete the 6-month journey of waiting and anticipating this new device. I showered, grabbed a few bottles of Steve Jobs approved smartwater and jump in the car. I drive to the gas station I visit every morning for my daily dose of Diet Dew and head to my AT&T store of choice. The entire morning I was panicked thinking there would be lines around the block that formed through the night. If you read Engadget, you’ll see that Chicago and San Francisco have long lines, circus clowns, and more.

I left. No one was there.

I decided to check the other east side stores to see if there was much of a crowd.

Nothing.

The Courier quoted me in an article today about the hype surrounding the iPhone. I’m starting to think the hype just isn’t there for Evansville. Why do you think that is?

Are any of my readers getting an iPhone today? If so, what time are you going to get in line, and where?

Reasons why there is no hype in Evansville:

The phone costs too damn much. For $600, that phone better be dialing when I’m just THINKING of calling someone.

Plus we know Evansville, unless they throw in a shotgun, a copy of ‘Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector’, and a free tank of gas no one is going to care.

Plus I think a lot of tech savvy people are going to wait for the bugs to be worked out or wait until they can replace their current phone through their plan.

I like how Verizon is still making an attempt, considering their billing and customer service sucks. At least AT&T has home based customer service…in Evansville soon!

sucks that their isnt the hype because we sure are expecting it at my store (burkhardt road att). it should still be a highly anticipated afternoon for some people around town! i will be one of the first people in evansville to even come in contact with the phone! arent you jealous?

To be completely honest I could care less and no I’m not jealous I feel sorry for you because this is going to be the highlight of your day and this phone is not worth it. I can get a PS3 for $600 why would i spend it on a cell phone A CELL PHONE. I have an ipod (which most people now do as well) and i have a nice cell phone (which most people also have) why do I need something that is both an ipod and a cell phone rolled into one. So I can get ripped off quicker and so this iphone spend most of its life on the charger i think not. I’ll stick ipod and my Motorola cell phone so i can save my money to get a PS3.

Cody, do you know how many you are going to get in?

I’m excited about it just because I heart gadgets, I have no plans on buying one though. I like my phone just fine, and it does more stuff that I want it do than the iPhone anyways. I’m just jealous of visual voicemail though. That is freaking cool.

I think I have to agree with Travis on this one haha, a lot of people in evansville probably dont want to pay all of that money for a phone, and to be honest no one that I know really cares that it’s coming out. They all have cells right now and always wait to upgrade their phone with their plan. I will not be buying one because my phone serves it’s purpose and that’s all I need.

Oooooo…I didn’t realize the iPhone has crappy disk space. 8 GIGS??? My current iPod holds 30 Gigs…I’m definately passing on this until it becomes like the Razor and they start giving them out for free with plans.

now that I’ve seen and played with your iPhone, i’m a little jealous….but I am going to hold off for a future generation—until then I’ll borrow your old phone (please!) and see what’s happening in the phone circuit this December when my plan is up…but I LOVE LOVE LOVE this iPhone, it’s crazy awesome

I can’t (and can) believe there is no hype over the i-phone in Evansville … they are going for over $1,000 on E-Bay! True that people already have cell phones and i-pods that do what they are designed to do, but with that logic then nobody should ever trade in their car, or get new jewelry, or any other kind of electronic device. What you already have works and there is no reason to upgrade … so out of curiosity Brian, why are you saving for a PS3? Assuming that you are a gamer and already have on of the older units that most likely still works. Why upgrade?
