Open Thread: Best Beer

I’m not much of a drinker myself, but my brother is well known in Evansville for closing a bar down. This one’s for him.
Let’s keep it simple. What’s your favorite beer? Domestic or import? Why?
Use this open thread to discus Cerveza.

For me this depends on the occasion and the time of year.
If I want to get drunk and have very little money, I’ll pick up a couple tallboys of Steel Reserve. The taste is enough to make you sprout chest hairs but it’s high alcohol content packs a hell of a punch.
If we’re talking domestics, Sam Adams is definitely the best. The typical domestics such as Bud, Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light, and so on are definitely not my first choice, but if I go somewhere and that’s all they have, that’s what I’m going to drink.
Now when we start to get into imported/craft/homebrew beers, it gets interesting. You have to decide if you’re in the mood for a lager, a stout, a pale ale, etc. I am a big fan of wheat ales myself. I think that the five best beers you can somewhat easily find in Evansville are:
Delerium Tremens
Sammy Smith’s Oatmeal Stout
Chimay (any label, although I seem to prefer the red one I think)
Celebrator Dopplebock
and #5, even though it isn’t technically a “beer,” goes to Lambic Framboise… it’s this raspberry beer brewed in Belgium and it tastes like angel sweat.

I love Woodchuck!!!!! Has a apple cider kinda taste. Doesn’t taste like a beer but it so yummy. It’ll kick your butt too if you aren’t careful.

I completely agree that the time of year, mood and meal is key in the selection. I will say that I absolutely adore Schlafley’s line of microbrews. The hefeweizen, summer kolsch, and coffee stout are amongst my favorite beers for sure.
I’d also love to recommend Ommegang Brewery. I’m a bit biased as it is based in my hometown (Cooperstown, NY) but the Hennepin is amazing.
I’ve never had a bad Dogfish Head beer either. Love their seasonal Punkin’ Ale the most.

It’s a tie!
Last summer I visited the Budweiser Brewery, for a quick tour and free samples before the Cards game. Budweiser has marketed a new summer ale, called BEACH BUM PALE ALE! A refreshing pale ale with hints of coriander and citrus zest.
However, mu life long favorite will always be Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout!!! A robust stout beer with a strong roasted nutty flavor, that accompanies a steak very well.

Woodchuck has an apple cider taste because it is a cider! That’s like saying you like Captain Morgan because it tastes like spced rum instead of rum. Let’s get real though. This is Evansville meaning if you live on the West side, the only thing that matters on the selection of beer is what is on sale — busch light or bud light unless you go to the Guerst Haus. Then you have to go with the imports, but you are not going to see me spending $50 bucks buying an imported case of beer when there is bud or busch light on sale.

If you know me then you know I am a true beer type of guy. My all time favorite is Vinny’s Light Lager at Turoni’s.(Pizza’s not bad there either). If I am not at Turoni’s downing a Vinny’s then you can find me kicking back a few Busch Lights.

I’m gonna follow the echo on this thread and say that it depends on the time of year. I as well love pretty much anything on the Schlafley’s lineup, but my all-time favorite microbrewery is Leinenkugel’s out of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Their sunset wheat is a year-round favorite and is hands-down my favorite summer time beer. Its a little pricey for an everyday beer, but Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale is another favorite of mine.
And no, I am not a heavy drinker … my college friends and I made a quest to sample any and every microbrew we came across because we got sick of the crap-water (bud, coors, miller) we Americans like to call “beer”

followed by BBC’s IPA.

Time of year is exactly right. This summer’s best beer for a hot day is Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. Light, refreshing, with just a touch of lemon.

Strictly a domestic dude here. Give me anything Miller, Bud, Coors — the colder the better.
Imports are for effetes!

I think that most people prefer domestics because they won’t give imports/craft/microbrews a chance. It definitely is an acquired taste. They made all these domestics taste the way they do so ANYONE can drink them. REAL beer does not taste like Bud Light. It’s pisswater formulated for wusses who can’t handle the good stuff. :)

Hey now, no need to talk bad about Bud Light because you can only drink three beers before being cut off by the bartender. I do like the imports and microbrews, but as far as an everyday beer, I have to go with the domestics. Money does not grow on trees and I drink more than a 6 pack on the weekends unlike yourself. Most of you are right some people are unwilling to buy imports, staying loyal to the domestics, but I enjoy trying ALL beers. Best import, I have tried Hoegaarden hands down good stuff.
