Newburgh Not a Fan of Coal Power

Comments | Add A Comment

Living in Newburgh, I can attest to the nasty air that we breathe on a daily basis. The town is already in violation of EPA air quality standards, and officials believe that if Henderson is able to build a new coal power plant right across the river, it will make the situation even worse.

Obviously, the folks that are building the power plant and Kentucky officials think there’s no basis to the claim. In fact, plant developer David Schwarz said he finds the concerns surprising because this will be one of if not the cleanest coal burning power plant in the country. Clean coal sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Nothing is set in stone as to whether the plant will be built, but we will know in a few months.

ridiculous.

i don’t understand how people can get so fired up about cigarette smoke, pushing for bans in restaurants and public venues but they have nothing to say about coal power plants, which have attributed to the ohio river valley region being cancer ridden.

i think it’s odd/gross when someone from the area moves away and everytime they come back for a visit they get sick because the air quality is so poor.

If you want to voice your opinion about the Cash Creek Power Plant, go to the Henderson County Courthouse at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 29. It’s in downtown Henderson.

I live in Newburgh as well and can agree with your claims on this situation. However, can you really call this journalism? The past three articles I have read have all been loaded with biased opinions. If I want someone to tell me what to think, I’ll go buy a NOFX CD. Let me make my own value judgment rather than challenge my intelligence by thinking for me.

Thanks,
Nick Schenk

I never claim to be the news or a journalist. I’m far too opinionated of a person to claim to be. Read the about page for more information on that.

If you disagree with my opinion, you’re welcome to debate it in the comments.

From the About Page-
“We cover major news events in our city, entertainment events at local venues, art showings and more.”

So you’re covering news events but claiming to not be the news?

Nick,

I agree with Justin, he never claimed to be that, it is more of an entertainment site with all sorts of things. Besides, he never told you what to think, he offered up a story and may have edged it a little, be never said you had to believe it. He also never asked you to read this site, so why are you complaining? if you don’t like it, tail between the legs and go to the courier site.

nick, again, that doesn’t claim that I am the news or a journalist. It says I cover stories, which I do — I link to sites like the Courier & Press, ABC 25, etc. with the stories from there that I think are interesting and that I think my readers find interesting. I’m going to put my opinion on the story because a) it provokes thought and debate, b) it start’s a discussion and c) because it’s my site and that’s how I want to write it. I started this site, and continue to write it because I like to write and I wanted to bring something like this to Evansville. If you aren’t a fan of what I’m doing, I’m sorry, but this is what I offer.

If you’d like to carry this on further, you are welcomed to email me. Please, keep on topic from now herein.

Yes!! More air pollution!!!!!!!!!!! Bring it!!! It’s bad enough that depending on the weather, I can smell sulfur in the morning….we need another factory in the area!!! Jeez! When will people take a hint. This is already an unhealthy area to live in…we don’t need another coal plant. I don’t care how “clean” it is, it’s still coal.
Also, the last time I checked we don’t have power outages due to lack of power production in the area. Why does Henderson need a plant anyways. Has anyone drove passed the Tyson plant? I mean, that stinks enough. We don’t need more power, Hendo doesn’t need it’s own plant. Maybe in the distand future when AB Brown is obsolete, we can build a new plant there, but for now…..F it!!!

Also, Justin…keep up the good work. If someone doesn’t want your opinion, they can check out the O’Reilly factor and the No Spin Zone!

The new plant in Henderson will be a “merchant plant,” meaning that the power will be sold to customers out-of-state. A lot of the power plants around us do that. We live in the highest concentration of coal plants in the world - our population doesn’t use all of that energy; we just breathe all the toxic chemicals they release.
