Open Thread: Evansville Shopping Hot Spots

My sister loves the mall. My brother works at the mall. I personally can’t stand going to the mall. Most of the clothes that are at the mall stores are trendy, overpriced and, in most cases, boring. When I want to buy clothing, I either visit the Internet or head to Chicago or another big city where the selection is more varied.
Am I wrong to say that Evansville isn’t the best when it comes to being a shopping destination? Are there any obscure, off the beaten path local stores you like shopping at?

The mall sucks. The only time I go there is to hit up EB to get a video game. I don’t like spending money on clothes anyway. If I shop anywhere here in town, it’s Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. Or thrift stores. Ballin’ on a budget!

I can’t go into EB. Too many nerd egos in there.

EB in the mall has gone down hill so much I can’t go there anymore, I go to one of the other locations. I’ve been shopping at Dillard’s lately. You may think they are expensive, but their markdown prices are cheaper than the discount stores. I’ve gotten a lot of high end shirts, such as POLO, for real cheap.

I hate the mall. I’m a curvy gal, so most of the stores don’t have my size. And the ONE plus size store in the mall… the clothes are actually too big for me. So I can’t win either way. I also HATE going to Old Navy because everything that is on sale is always sold out. Tell City has some nice outlet stores, if you want to make the drive.

well personally i like shopping at the mall, but only on occasion, if you look in the right places there are some decent sales you just have to look, for example, hollister will have shirts that are around 15 bucks, compared to 30 bucks on another shirt in the same store. always hit up the clearance sections. but to be honest, yeah evansville doesnt offer a wide variety of places to go, sometimes i feel like i have to go to the mall to get something that i like. they had a store called the liquid lizard downtown (it’s now out of business) it was kind of a hippie store, but overpriced! i’d like to find a vintage store that isn’t so expensive.

I only shop at Rural King, nothing but the finest flannel and carhartt will ever grace my body.

You know I like The Limited, sometimes Express (though their stuff has not been as good lately)
Two stores in Evansville:
District (off Lincoln b/w Vann and Boeke—next to Dukane)
Excusions (off Lincoln, by Barnes, just past Snodgrass, set off the road a little)
they are both womens stores—D is geared more towards women my age (early 20s) and I have no been in Exursions, but have heard reviews from my sister and mom, that it is for women of any age range for the most part (that being 20s-50s—cute stuff, no frump, stylish.

A lot of name brands I really like you can’t even FIND in this area. The only way to get most of the stuff I want is to order it online, and I tend to have expensive tastes, so unless I wanna pay $70-150 for a hoodie or $30 for a freakin’ t-shirt, I have to go without. I have too many interests to spend my limited money on clothes anyway. I’d rather spend my cash on stuff that will actually give me something in return, like music gear, photography stuff or art supplies.

As far as mall stores go, Nirvana’s one of the few I actually like. Charlotte Russe has its moments, I suppose. I miss the good ol’ days when Wet Seal and Gadzooks were actually a little bit interesting. It’s all gone to duplicate crap.
But then who needs retail? One thing E-ville’s got going for it is the bitchin’ thrift stores. I am probably one of the world’s biggest thrift store nuts. Salvation Army on Morgan, Goodwill on First Ave and the Wearhouse on Washington are my favorites. Or there’s always Plato’s Closet, if you’re a label snob, wanna pay a little more, and aren’t willing to dig a little for the diamonds in the rough.

You know, I love Old Navy and you can actually find a lot of stuff there for a good price and I can’t lie, but Target has some great deals and the clothes are made by the expensive label designers too so the quality is there. check it out and Meltingman, nice plug for Dillards…TOOL!

I suppose I should confess that I get a lot of my shirts from Insanely Great Tees. So much for fashion sense. :)

I own an “alternative” clothing store and hair salon here in Evansville. We have been here for 2 years, and are struggling to keep going because people still think Hot Topic is the place to shop. When I opened, I had counted on more community support. Justin, I contacted you several months ago regarding an interview, and never heard back!

Sounds like some sense of fashion needs to come to your town. There is not hardly anything here either, but I rarely shop here. I spend my checks in Indy or Chicago or online. What people wear here in Indiana, is so last season anyway, by the time it hits our stores!

We have plenty of great stores in the mall. I don’t understand why it’s not good enough for all of the hayseeds in this town. If you have been to the bigger malls in other cities I think ours compares very well. How many people on here bitching have actually been to Dillards or Macy’s? Obviously if you like to wear outdoors gear or oversized ghetto threads the mall is not the place to go so don’t waste your time. I really don’t think that Simon malls is really concerned with weird people in this town.

Jessi! Hi! Great, now I feel bad for not mentioning y’all and for not going to see you more often… though I’m excused for not visiting at the moment, since I’m in Indy for the summer.
No excuse for forgetting to shamelessly plug your store online, though. My bad.
And yes, everybody, Kurl Up and Dye at Florida and Heidelbach is the shiz and you should all go there. As far as unique designs and deconstructions, and alterations, I’ve yet to see anything that Jessi can’t do.

We need something like an amusement park, aquarium, or major leauge team. Something that attracts people and keeps us busy.Something the whole family can do like a year round fall festival.

Well, we have Holiday World 45 minutes from here, a zoo, and a minor league team at least, which isn’t bad for a city of only 150,000.

Well I personally see nothing wrong w/ the mall stores. Hollister and Abercrombie and fitch are some of my favorite stores. I think all u guys are whining about the clothes jus because you cant afford them. Both stores have all differnt kinds of clothes. If some of you people would go check it out instead of being stuck up on jus a couple stores!

@ dakota, I’m not trying to be a snob here….but why can’t people just choose their own style, be it Walmart or Macy’s or Abercrombie or Excursions. Actually, a lot of these stores that aren’t in the mall are probably more expensive and a lot better quality than some of the mall stores, so that just cancels out your “can’t afford them” theory. Besides, it’s sort of rude for you to say that people are whining because they can’t afford them—do you really judge people on if they are wearing Hollister or not? trust me, not that important and is sort of rude to say…..
Everyone, I mentioned Excursions in a previous post—well, a few weeks ago I finally did get to the store. I got a pair of 7 jeans, and a cute dress I wore to a wedding .The clothes are really nice, great style, and they are often things you’ll only find in NYC or other large towns. The store is a little expensive, but right now there is a great sale going on—so get there before it is gone, because some of the things are really nice!
Excursions is off Lincoln, entrance directly across the street from the Barnes HILL entrance. Next to Snodgrass on the left side (if you’re going to newburgh, right side if you are going towards ue)

best clothing store? my favorite clothing store? Top Spot Outdoors.
if you tried nearly anything from Patagonia or Mountain Hard Wear or Cloudveil, you’re skin will smile. granted, the clothing can be a little expensive, but they have a lifetime warranty. read that again: a lifetime warranty. (doesn’t cover normal wear & tear, of course, but manufacturer’s defects.) plus, for those of us tree-huggers, many of Patagonia’s fleece clothing is made from recycled plastics.
