East Side Review: Salad World

If you know me, or saw that awful profile of me in the Courier a few weeks ago, you know that I’m a bit obsessive with being healthy. I workout twice a day and usually try to eat healthy for the most part. Sadly, I have a sick addiction to chocolate, but that’s for another post. Since I’m pretty busy, I usually grab a quick lunch from a sandwich shop, deli or my all-time favorite restaurant Ritzys. Ritzy’s has the best salad in town for a fast food restaurant I think. Each time I drive by Ritzy’s, however, I have noticed this restaurant in the old New York Subs building. Out of curiosity and a tip from a friend, I headed to Salad World this week.

As I walked in I realized it was very small, dark, and was making an attempt to be fancy with the cross-hatched room divider. I was a little turned off and actually worried I had made a mistake.

As I walked to the counter I was abruptly stopped by the waitress asking if I was getting carry out and pointed to menus on a table behind me. I was confused since there was a menu on the wall behind the counter. However, I noticed the wall menu didn’t list any of the actual salads—odd since it’s Salad World.

Looking over the menu, I saw they listed their salads with photos on the front of the menu: salmon and asparagus salad, endive salad, grilled shrimp salad, and a handful of others that all looked delicious. They offered fresh soups to full entrees, though I was actually focused on the grilled pitas and wraps. Sure, the place is Salad World, but you can always judge the quality of a restaurant by trying their non-specialties. Salad world had several wraps available including California, Caesar, and Chicken Salad.

I choose the Chicken Salad on a tomato wrap. On the wrap there was lettuce, tomato, and chicken salad. It was quite good. The chicken salad was mayonnaise based with walnuts and dried cherries in
it. It came with a side of coleslaw, although I’m sure that could be substituted or added to as there were other sides on the menu. Sound simple? I thought so. I don’t know what they do, but I took my first bite and instantly wanted more. It was delicious. I would go back in heartbeat.

A meal for just over $4.00 of coleslaw and a huge chicken salad wrap. Definitely go try it out.

Salad World is located at 519 E. Virginia Street; (812) 471-5083. It’s open from 11AM to 8PM Monday to Saturday. Closed Sunday.
