Goodbye Abandoned Houses: You’re Being Demolished
With all the construction that is going on this summer, we’d like to take time to talk about demolition. Neighborhood Inspection Services is going through the process of tagging nearly 50 abandoned homes around the Evansville area for demolition this summer. If you’ve been to some parts of the city, you can probably spot the abandoned, run down houses I’m talking about.
How exactly does the NIS determine whether to put a home on the list you ask? Workers must first decide if the damage is more than 50 percent of the value. They evaluate damage by looking at windows, siding, trim and the foundation.
The demolition derby is set to begin in the next 45 days. Remember kids, part of progress is not only building new things, but getting rid of gross old things as well.

This is fine as long as they dont build the shoebox habitat homes in their place.

I hear you Erik, or Section 8 homes that will just be destroyed in two years! That we ultimately pay for to build!!!

I’m not really sure what they’re putting in place of these homes. Probably just a vacant lot and an ERA For Sale sign.

I am not necessarily against low income housing. But I would hate to own a nice victorian downtown only to have the character of the neighborhood ruined by these ugly homes. Granted, a crumbling old home doesn’t do much for the character of a neighborhood either, but….

Does anyone know if people can salvage architectural parts in these houses?
I imagine some of the old ones still have nice doors, wood, hardware, etc.
