Evansville Gas Prices Are High. Who Knew?

Comments | Add A Comment

We probably don’t need to tell you that gas is incredibly expensive right now. Prices around town are all above $3 and have hit as high as $3.30. Just yesterday I pumped $3.55 into my tank for premium. Ouch! Why is gas so expensive? If you ever took a basic economics course, you learned about supply and demand. There’s a limited supply of gasoline and high demand for it during the summer travel season. Because of this, stations are able to raise their price to meet the demand.

With Memorial Day weekend approaching, the gas prices don’t seem to be curbing driving and travel too much. While some people around town have taken to the METS bus instead of driving, the majority don’t seem to be bothered enough to change. For example, AAA expects there to be more travelers on the road this year than last year for the holiday. Rather than driving less or not taking those weekend trips, we’re cutting other luxuries out of our lives. 40% of consumers are taking fewer shopping trips to accommodate for the increased gasoline prices.

Does the price of gas bother you? Are you changing any of your habits because of it? Tell us in the comments.

I think that is because they’re so close to the Gulf. Up at Purdue, prices are hovering around $3.50.

While Hurricane Kitrina obviously planned, when the price of gas shot up, the oil companies said to themselves, “WOW!! Look at all this money we’re making!” This is obviously the case because unlike 2005, they have yet to produce a solid reason as to why we’re paying prices even higher then we did two years ago. So while I understand “supply and demand” and the fact that there IS less supply and demand may be somewhat greater, there is still no reason for the price to be this high. Isn’t it funny how for many, many years gas prices were always between $1.00 and $2.00 then suddenly, within ONE Summer the price went from $2.00 to well over $3.00? Doesn’t anyone else find that to be odd? The other thing that I find interesting is how they keep saying, “Well, the demand isn’t going down!” Who is driving more then they did last year? I’m not and neither is anyone I know. The fact is that people need to drive to work, people need to drive to the grocery store…these are things we HAVE to do. So, of course people are cutting out other things to make up for it. What choice do we have? Then, when you factor in that we have a lame-duck president who works with oil companies and only cares about his own agenda, the end result is we’re screwed and there’s absolutly nothing we can do about it. Even if the president says he has nothing to do with oil companies anymore, you know he still has friends there and you know he’s going to make sure they make their billions of dollars. The fact is that the rich get richer and the poorer get poorer. I’ve just gotten to the point in my own life where I figure if the money-grubbing babies need their money for their hookers, drugs and $400 haircuts, let them have it. They obviously need it more then me and once it’s all over, you can’t take your money with you anyway.

Thornton’s at Boeke and Morgan had gas prices at $3.37 today! That is outrageous! Yes, I have cut back on my driving. I go to work and try to get all errands done before coming home. And then I just stay home. I have to have gas to go to work. I have medications that I cannot afford to buy. And I have had to cut back on groceries. These oil companies admitted last summer that they are only interested in lining their stockholders pockets! I think maybe I will buy a moped.

I drive to and from Washington every day for work … I fill up every 3-4 days … not fun.
