USI to Increase Tuition?
I know we have a lot of readers out at USI, so I thought I’d share this one. USI is proposing two increases in tuition for full-time, in-state and undergraduate students. The first increase for the upcoming school year would increase tuition by $271. The following year, the 2008-2009 school year, tuition would increase again by $287. For those that weren’t math majors, that’s an extra $500+ over the next two school years.
Why the increase in tuition you ask? University officials blame it on bringing in new faculty as well as increased operational costs at the University (personnel, benefits, etc). The University will hold a public hearing on Thurs May 17 at 3:00PM in the University Center (Carter Hall ABC) if you’d like to voice your concerns.
Tuition hikes aren’t an irregular thing by any means. My tuition went up every chance they had at Purdue. In fact, they’re looking to raise it again this year.

Wow! A lot of the students come to USI because it is cheap, too. They could lose a lot of perspective students over this!

It is still the least expensive school in the state. Tuition needs to go up if the University is to thrive.

try paying out-of-state tuition at Purdue and then see if you still want to complain about a whopping $271 increase in tuition

You both raise good points. The only reason I said that was just because when I talked about it with a few people who pay out of pocket, they said that they were thinking about going to IVY

tech-but thats just probably their frustration speaking.
Keep in mind, though, that for some people a couple thousand a year, like USI, is still a lot for people who can only make so much a year, and are the non-traditional students who have kids and such.
