Open Thread: What to Get Mom for Mothers Day

Mothers Day is coming up this Sunday, and I have nothing to get my mother for a gift. I’ve already given her the standard gifts before: chocolates, cards, iPods, gift certificates. I need something new. I need something fun. I need creativity.
Because of this, I come to you, my dear It’s Evansville readers for help. Use this Open Thread and tell me what you are getting your mother to mothers day.

I got my mom a Merry Maids service. She is hosting a family reunion over Memorial Day weekend, and my siblings and I thought she would enjoy someone else cleaning the house.

Get her a candy boquet. I think they make them in the floral dept. at Schnucks. Possibly even Walmart.

My mother is 89 this year and I am flying into E’town from Surprise, Arizona for a week visit; my youngest son is also coming from North Dakota for a few days. It will be a nice visit, as my sister also lives next door to my mother in E’town. E’town is my home town and I enjoy an annual visit to the surrounding area. I am planting a shrub or flowers/perennials in my mother’s yard for Mother’s Day. My youngest son plans to eat a brain sandwich while he is in E’town; I will abstain, as I’m a vegetarian.

Does she have a flower garden? Buy some seeds or “starts” for the garden. Maybe she needs some new gloves or tools. Perhaps a hummingbird feeder?
You could also get a gift certificate for a car wash and detail - give her car that new car smell again! What I wouldn’t give for my kids to come home with a GC like that! Those people really clean the cars well.
OR you could make your own GC or coupon - offer to clean her car out, vaccuum, detail it yourself - make those wheels shine!
OR - does she have anything around the house that needs to be done? Gutters cleaned out? Something that requires a ladder? Take down the curtains so she can wash them and then be there to re-hang them?
Sometimes, it isn’t what you give, but what you do that matters a lot to moms! ;)

Often my mom actually asks for Gift Certificates for a Massage or Facial—see what they have—if they have several nice ones at the same price, I often get a gift card for the price so she can choose depending on her mood and desire, otherwise I will get a gift certificate for one or the other, but make sure that if she wants to upgrade that she will be able to. I always have the rule—NEVER give a gift certificate unless giving another nice gift, but I feel that this is actually a rather nice one and often give this as the sole gift.
Also, along the same lines, Essentials Day Spa (on Lincoln Ave. Across from Dukane —where I often go— ) has the option of getting a day package—I’m not sure how it works, but you can go ask, and it includes multiple things to pamper your mother, as well as a light lunch and beverage. I’ve heard good things about it, though i’ve never done it myself.
You can never go wrong with jewelry either!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think a great Mothers Day gift would be an air conditioner relay switch for a worn out 1998 Mustang Convertible. Or maybe a pedicure. Either one would be nice.
