In Focus

Flickr user trisheroverton published a photo of one of my favorite buildings in town. These buildings are located along NW 3rd St and are some of the brightest colors you’ll see in town. I’d love someone to refurbish this building and turn it into apartments.
There’s not many monumental pieces of architecture in Evansville that we’re known for, but what’s your favorite local building in town? Why do you like it? Got a photo of it to share with us?

Trust me, that place sucks. I used to live there and the building should be demolished. There is no point in even trying to renovate it. On the plus side, I broke in one day to walk around because someone told me they left a Super Nintendo in there. I didn’t find that but I did come across a Calvin and Hobbes book that I didn’t previously have, so I considered it a successful mission.

Ya, it’s too bad vandals ruined the nice artwork that used to be outside these buildings. Still, I love to drive by these structures - it makes me happy!
Peace, love and lipgloss

The vacant lot in the right of the shot is where the original FolzCity Boutique stood. I helped with the rebuild/remodeling of it when Bob bought it. Have a pic
somewhere of a banana-eating contest he held on the sidewalk out front.

How come the old FolzCity Boutique building is gone? I remember going there when I was in high school.

I have 118 pics of Evansville. It’s a work in progress of some of my favorite buildings in the downtown area and the west side.

The building housing FolzCity was simply unkept for many years after the business closed and suffered structurally from the neglect. It was condemned and razed sometime in the ‘80’s.
It wasn’t anything special, just a lot of cool memories of the Hippie days of Evansville.

I think these places look amazing, if renovated they could be nice as hell—and I know that guy said they were shit, but see, that’s the purpose of renovating: a lot of work, a lot of modeling, and wahlah! A place that looks hella cool on the outside and is insanely nice on the inside.

As someone who has personally lived in that building and been in damn near every apartment, I can certainly tell you that renovating it wasn’t worth the effort. It was too junky to even bother with. I’ll betcha the new owner of the building probably paid some bum $50 to set the place on fire so he could get a fat insurance check since the building was probably going to be demolished anyway.

Hey Tom… I won that banana eating contest(the first one) on the sidewalk at Folz City!I was a 14 year old 135 pounder just getting ready to start my freshman year at Reitz. 1974? I ate 43 in 1 hour. Bob Folz aka “the funky monkey” personally gave me a gift certificate for $200 bucs. I bought a waterbed, some cool clothes from upstairs, band on the run by wings, and some cool stuff from downstairs lol. I’m in Florida now but thanks for the memory!

As an added note,I built most of the stairs to the downstairs smokeshop, along with the 3rd floor bay window. Remember the sprayed-foam ceiling!?

Tom,
Good to hear from you! Nice to meet you. I had given up on that thread… but kept on checking. Yes, I remember the foam downstairs. Looked like stalactites and stalagmites. And upstairs where the clothes were sold. It was very cool to a 14 yr old in 1970’s. Good job! Did you work on the night club he had for a while? The name escapes me now… I applied to be a busboy there but I was only 15 and my dad called in and busted me. They said come back in a year. LOL If you could find that pic, well, I might be in it. I won that sucker! I was 14 yrs old. 43 bananas in an hour. Great memories. I’m in Florida now and have been for 26 yrs, When I found that Evansville in focus and I saw your comments, well it took me back. Thanks. I won that first banana contest. I was a whopping 140 lbs. Second place was Dwayne Parkes weighing 300+. lol. I went to Reitz and played football for them. Are you from the west side? I bet that was some good times for you as well. Look for a thin young kid in those pics. I still can’t believe that there might be documentation of that event. Thanks so much for this blast from the past. Keep in touch, and if you find those pics, please forward them. I would be very appreciative. Are you in Evansville now?

Hello again,David. The pic I can’t find just has Bob carring a yellow wooden Coke crate full of bananas. The “tables” made of stacked concrete blocks could be seen in the backround. No contestants as I remember. This is from memory,I’ll keep looking as I get the chance.
Alas, saddly, one person I knew that actually did work at the FolzCity Boutique and may have had more pictures was shot and killed in a bar shooting a few years ago. I helped with the Funky’s bar building and revamp a few years later, but bid not work there. Broke a finger placing those damn creek rocks on the back room floor past the coat check room.

Tom, sorry about your finger, but that place did look amazing. I had forgotten about Folz City Boutique, that was a great place as well. What ever became of Bob Folz? Any ideas? Boy, I sure do remember those crates of bananas! We figured I ate about seven pounds worth lol. Bob was a terrific promoter wasn’t he? On another subject, do you remember the free 4th of July concerts at the river in that park? Sunset park? Those were great times. That seems like a world away now. Thanks again for bringing back those memories. You sound like you were a big part of creating that atmosphere.

Finger healed OK,pretty much. :D Haven’t heard of or from Bob for about ten or 15 years. One of his best woodworker pals lives down in KY somewhere but haven’t looked him up. The C&P had an article about him some time back. He made those wonderful “sunburst” wood thingies for Bob. We’ve all settled down,I suppose, and dropped out of the wild life! Since I can’t find the Banana pic,I bet you wouldn’t believe I really do have a pic from the 1976 (yeah,I’m that old)Sunset park concert/party. Hundreds of us all sang “Happy Birthday,America”
What a time,indeed!
ps that box must be in the garage or the spare bedroom aka junk room.
I haven’t given up on it.

Sorry about the shock seeing the vacant lot there, tim. The tennement-looking buildings burnt some time ago. They were just adjacent to where FolzCity stood. All of us ?ld hippies wonder the whereabouts of Bob Folz
